So back to the topic of this thread, the way to debate opposing views is that there is no debate because junior is the judge, jury, and executioner all wrapped up in one.

I don't know about anyone else but I have to vent. I'm sick and tired of almost every topic turning into -- Liberals bla blah blah blah to be followed about God and getting into heaven blah blah blah. I wish there were a " you've said that 3 times you can't say it again" rule.

A fundamental flaw in your original intent is that very few folk understand the purpose of debate. It is not to convince the opposing view to change their mind; and closed mindedness is an asset in debate. The so called rules of debate are for the benefit of the audience, not the participants, who are the ones seeking to evaluate positions. You cannot both be a participant in a debate, and a member of the audience ... which is what you have here on GB. And to debate you must respect your enemy regardless of how much you hate his viewpoint.

I would sincerely hope that all men hold fast to their convictions in the face of opposition, or else there really is no strength left in our nation. I do not highly value opinions that shift with the wind, fold in the face of question, or err on the side of tolerance, that capricious god of secularism. Rather you be hot or cold ...

OK, that's well said. But first a debator has to have a cogent opinion separated from emotion and supported by facts, figures, history, etc.
When we see personal attacks or ad hominens we must conclude none of these features of debate existed in their arguement. Not all people are debators..........

I only disagree with one part of what you wrote, and that is the power of emotion in debate. Reality demonstrates that for most issues, there are facts, figures, history that support differing perspectives on the exact same issue. How one feels about those facts are deeply personal, and often shared by persons of similar tradition, culture or viewpoint. To leave emotion out of debate is to try to reduce all conversation to mathematics, and we are unable to do so as we simply do not have all the data. We do however have sufficient data to solicit a feeling, and some require less data than others. Debate then is not devoid of emotion, rather its seeks to demonstrate the relationship between data and appropriately held emotoin.

There's an interesting statement I am trying to remember, made by an author of a recent book on conspiracy theories. The gist of it is that many conspiracy theorists use data to obuscate others abilities to perceive their feelings. The data is often voluminous and interesting, but far more leading in nature than conclusive. And for those that want to be lead in the direction, its easy to embrace as truth. That's why its important to hold fast to what you believe so that you will not be lead down a path by someone just because they brought data ... not all that glitters is gold.

You sure wouldn't want to debate Republicans and Democrats in DC. One side admits it! The other side denies it, but does nothing to stop it.I guess there's little difference in Liberal Democrats and Liberal Republicans.
