OK---FURTHER ADVICE SOUGHT
« on: April 18, 2011, 03:15:40 AM »
I have a couple of grips from grashorn's and they are good--lovely, by any account.
I have shot them side by side in two different Smith's, interchanging the grips with target grips.
I shoot better with the larger grips--but there is a draw back. I don't like the roughness of the wood panels over a lot of shooting. The smooth panels of the stag are much better.
Where--maybe, who is a better question--can I go to for smooth target grips for the "N" frames?

I'm just a casual handgunner so this might sound ignorant, but I bought some SW grips on ebay.  I needed I think it's I frame - the 5 shot K frame - but they had N as well.  They were from Asia, pretty cheap, made from the native hardwood and quite attractive.  They fit perfectly - had to push just a bit and then they snapped on with no motion even without the screw.  After a few shots the gun is moving in the hand, as they are perfectly smooth and pretty slender - maybe more of a carry grip than what you are looking for.  I hope buying these is not controversial - we live in a global market, might as well make it work for us.

Big easy
I am looking at Ahrends, and I like them.
I read that their retro grips are slimmer--so i called the this morning and was told the are quiet a bit slimmer than S&W target grips.
I don't know if I want to experiment again.
Do you have personal experience with them?

William

I have a pair on my 4 inch 629.  Yes, they are slimmer then factory targets.  They feel good to me, just a little different.  Very well made, and a perfect fit.  I have average length fingers, but big hands, and wear a size 20 ring.  If you want the exact same feel as factory, you might want to look for a pair on this site, or ebay / gunbroker.  Eagle grips makes a model that are supposed to replicate the factory target "coke" style, but I have not tried them.  People also speak highly of the factory targets available from S&W they are using on some of their retro revolvers, and they are only about $60.00 I believe, but they are checkered only.  I once had a beautiful pair of smooth targets that came on a S&W 27 I once owned.  They were blond color, with dark swirls.  Like an idiot, I gave them to a friend after replacing them with a set of rubber grips as I was carrying it as a duty gun at the time.

These are Factory.
Go to the website they are about 80 but if you check arounf with some gun shops you can find them.
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764804_-1_758002_757843_757837_ProductDisplayErrorView_N
The other option is to get the checkerd target stocks and modify them.  Most shops have a pair or two that came off an 80's 29 for the pachmyer rubber grips.
A) fill in the checkering with epoxy.  Ugly but effictive
B) grab a file and shape your own grips
Oh the ones on the 28 4" I found in a shop in the late 90's for $25 bucks. new in the plastic box.  I should have bought all three.

Called S&W about the smooth grips--only round butt to square
Called their supplier Altamonts--no smooth grips in square butt target.
CAN get the retro in checkered--when they have them.
I may take a chance on the Ahrends.
OR I can get the retro which i know I like--but not crazy about the checkered panels.
What do you think.

Actually, the rules here is that this thread should have been removed.  Classifieds (for sale or want to buy) are not allowed on a discussion forum.  Discussion should have been by PM or the grips should have been put on a classified forum.

Well---thread drift happens from time to time---it is not an ongoing problem.
I think that is why. The conversation just happened without any premeditation.
Its cool.
