.32-20 Handi
« on: July 26, 2011, 06:31:16 AM »
Here's the new .32-20 Handi.  She's all dressed up ready to go out.  I'm trying loads at 850, 1500 and 2150 fps.  So far all are accurate, but which is the best?  Soon to see.  I was rummaging around the gun room looking for stuff to take to the shoot for the auction and found a box of .310 round balls.  I loaded some over 5.0 gr. Trail Boss and was happily impressed.  At 35 feet, they shoot through a 2x4.  I added a 1x4 and it didn't go through.

Oh, that's our antique wood cook stove in the background.  It is fun and toasty to cook on in Winter ;)

Pete

P.S.  I just chronyed the round ball load......942 fps.  I think I'll slow it down til I get it sub-sonic.

Thank you.  I do like the slim contour barrel.  It's real light and Handi.

Frank, I'm pretty sure it was a Trotter Special.  I bought the barrel from Datil and had a gunsmith work on the forend stud and the frame and had it reblued.

My Grandfather used to have a wood cook stove in the kitchen. I hauled about a million arm loads of wood up from the basement to feed it. :o
There's nothing like a fresh loaf of bread baked in it and some venison frying in a cast iron pan on top. :)
Thanks for the memories Pete. ;)

Pete,

942 fps should be subsonic unless you are at really high altitude.  FWIW, I loaded some .310" round balls over 4.5 grains of TB in a 32 H&R Mag case and shot them out of my '06 shorty with a chamber adapter.  Kinda fun to play with at close range. ;D

Tom, I thought it was slower.  I found this:

The   speed of sound  varies depending on the temperature, pressure, and density of the medium through which the sound waves travel. For dry air at sea level at 68° F, the speed of sound is 767 miles per hour, or 1235 km/h

The speed of sound in air at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) is 343 metres per second. That is 1126.547 feet per second.

I think we're 6 or 9 hundred above sea level.

Sea level speed of sound is ~ 1150fps or ~ 767 mph  ;D
Nice looking handi, I think 32-20 is one of those classics that will never die out.

Thanks guys for the complements on the rifle.  I must have a lucky handi gold horseshoe in my back pocket.  The first time it was the three way swap on the .357s/.35.  The second time it was the find of the 7.62x39 and now this....pure good fortune all the way.

Looks pretty simular to mine Pete, (Left one is 32-20 right is 25-35) I just KNEW you would love it!!  ;)

For the heavy loadings, be sure to try some 7.62x39 123Gr (OR 124/125) bullets!!! Mine shoot GREAT at top velocities!

Nice looking rifles, CW.  We ought to get them together for a family portrait. ::)   I'm bit with what I call the "dash bug"......45-70, .38-55, .32-20.  I'd like a .25-35 and a .44-40.
I just like those old time calibers.  They're easy to load for and fun to shoot.  I'm too skinny a little Italian to go for the .45-90, 100 or 120.  The .45-70 with a full load is about what I can happily take.  (My wife says I'm the only Italian see's ever seen my age that isn't fat, bald and can't sing.)

Don't get old ::)  I was confusing mph for fps.

The scope is an elcheapo I found on ebay.  An AIM, 37.95 including rings and shipping.  I bought it thinking it would wind up on my 7 year old grandson's .22, which is where it will go.  It is fine for clarity, and accuracy on the light recoiler.  The retical is graduated both ways, but is thick, which I don't like.  It covers too much of a small target at a distance.  I'll replace it.
