Accuracy of new mini-14?
« on: May 30, 2011, 06:06:39 AM »
I've always found the mini-14 to be attractive, light and compact, but like Col. Whelen I find only accurate rifles to be interesting. I know the early versions generally could not be expected to do better than 3 moa on their best days. I don't demand sub-moa but do want 2 moa or better, day in and day out.
I've heard the new target version is a pretty good shooter but the weight kinda defeats the "light and compact" idea.  Could I be satisfied with a new Ranch Rifle?
I also like the idea of the mini-30 but I've heard they tend to be even less accurate.

Well Joe, I bought a new mini-14 500 series. It was a stainless synthetic ranchrifle. The one I had would meet your requirements. It was much more accurate than any of the older minis I've owned. About 1&1/2" groups were possible. My son in law wanted a rifle so I gave him his choice of that mini or his pick of the 2 AR15s I owned at the time. He chose the mini so that ended my testing on the new mini. But yes IME the new ones are much more accurate than the older ones of which I've owned 3............

It's no trick to get sub 1/2" groups with a properly set-up AR, I don't see that with this new AR on a consistant basis.

I get 1.5 inch 3 shot groups and have really done very little load development.

I have a new series Mini 14 in 6.8 Rem SPC and it will do 1 1/2 inch three shot groups at 100 yards. The groups will open up as barrel gets hot.  It is plenty accurate for most deer and hog hunting.

Sounds good! I hadn't thought about the 6.8mm, seems it might be more useful than the 7.62.
