Things are looking bad
« on: May 25, 2011, 03:49:45 AM »
The chances of having a garden at all are not looking good this year.  We have had constant rain and cold weather since the snow melted and my garden plot is like a swamp.  I bought some onion sets and cabbage starts a couple of weeks ago when things looked like they might dry out, but the rains came back.  Same thing happened last year and the majority of my seeds rotted in the ground.  I planted beans and corn three times and only had time for a minimal harvest before the first freeze got them.  I guess I'm just going to have to cover the entire plot with a greenhouse if I plan to have any kind of garden next year.  I hope the rest of you folks are having better luck.
Thanks for the stump

I feel for you.  Here in central MO things are just a little better.  We have had rain almost every day this spring.  I have got a few things in during short dry spells.  Second planting of corn (first rotted in ground) is finally coming up as well as the first planting of okra.  Planted a row of bush beans and they seem to be making it but I am not satisfied with germination level.  I may have to get my water buffalo out and re plant. ;D  I planted a small patch of yard long bean seeds that a friend gave me a couple of years ago and glory be I think every seed came up in just a few days.  Now I have to get out there today if the ground is not  too soft from rain last night and build a teepee out of cane for them to climb on.  I haven't looked at garden yet this morning.  Hope the weather clears up for you

Not a good year for a garden here in southern Indiana either.  Been wetter than any time since they started keeping records in the 1800s.  Got some things out a couple weeks ago between rains and the hail messed up some of that day before yesterday.  A first this morning for me, 3 sets of deer tracks in the garden.  Danged if they hadn't been eatin strawberries. :o  Didn't even know they liked them.  Glad we had a bumper crop last year and put up everything I got my hands on.  I won't get too concerned for 2 or 3 years in the future.

PBS, like Ranger I feel for ya, if that helps.   :)

Have you considered planting on ridges?  When the garden gets fit this year, till it up and spade the soil into ridges. The soil will warm faster in the spring, the seedbed will stay dryer, most likely above water at all times. You don't have to knock the ridges down every fall, but you might want to become familiar with using roundup to burn down the weeds in the spring. The key is to have a nice ridge built that will over winter without eroding down to level.

You may not want to do everything this way but the beans, tomatoes, peppers, corn would all benefit. You get the benefits of a raised bed without having to build and haul soil.

Deer seem to love strawberries.  I once had a small patch about twenty-five feet from my dog pen and about this time of year the deer would come in, ignore the dogs and not only eat the berries but eat the plants right down to the bare ground.  Finally had to fence the plot to keep them out.

New garden on a new piece of ground this year, garden area is on a hillside and needed to be terraced anyway.  Mine has been drying out well enough, but the too wet and too cold spells are taking their toll on what is growing.

Our May was colder than normal and wetter than normal.  I have everything planted but the big winds we have been having are real hard on anything that is much above the ground like my brocolli and especially the tomatoes.  Wind just about beats them to death....already had to replace 1/3 of my tomato plants.

But June-August is supposted to be a bit warmer and drier than normal in our area so we'll see.

best of luck to ya Long.  here in Ky we're already having too hot and too dry conditions.  Just three weeks ago it was cold (50's) and wet, now it's 90's high humidity, and no rain in sight to settle the dust.  Got to water the pepper plants and carrots today.

Lots of flooding this spring, had over 12 in of rain in 13 days. I was disgusted that I couldn't plant. Then after it dried up enough I did plant then we got another 8 inches in just over a week. Lost several tomato plants and peppers, after 4 weeks only about 25% of my potatoes are up, rest rotted. This week I replanted green beans, and squash, they had rotted too.  Out of 4 kinds of summer squash only one plant came up. Put out a bunch of onions today. No rain for a week now and none in sight for the next week. Lost everything last year too and had to replant. After replanting last year we got less  than 2 in of rain in 3 mo, I fear we'll repeat that this year. Drought last year stunted the wheat crops here, my neighbor cut and baled his wheat for hay. I wish my heart would let me garden like I used to. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Starting to dry up here. Buffalo gnats aren't quite as bad.
Yesterday we tilled up about an acre and planted about 1/2 in sorgo. Just enough rain this AM to settle the dust. Tomorrow I'll get started on the other 1/2.
Had it all tilled a month ago, but it got too wet and up came a nice green carpet of grass, so we did it over. At least we got plenty of grass  mulch for the garden.
Beans up, 'taters up, corn up, eating sugar-snap peas. Getting ready to plant more corn; maybe between the sorghum rows.
I'm thinking of a broccoli patch for the rabbits on the far side of the cane; for the "meat garden".

Things are really looking hp here in the Ozarks.  Although it has gone from cold and wet to hot and dry.  All warm weather plantings are really jumping up.  I can almost watch tomatoes grow.  I cut a bunch of Romain, some green onions and picked some snap peas this morning while it was still somewhat cool.  We will be having these along with some sliced turkey in a salad for dinner.  It is almost too hot to work in the garden during the day.  As I was out of town for about 4 days last weekend I really need to cut some lawn, spread the clippings on corn and okra as mulch and start staking the tomatoes.  I have water next to garden so dry conditions are not a real worry.  Late plantings of black eyed peas and such are just breaking ground.  Life is good,!  I wouldn't mind if we got a little rain and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees though. :)

Planted my "late" sweet corn today, parts of that area are muddy, but most of it worked up just right.

WE set out about another dz or so tomato plants. After a second planting still no cucumbers, maybe 10% of potatos and a few squash and green beans. I'm tired of fighting it this year. Got about 2 tenths of an in of rain last night, first in 15 days, it's dry now that the flooding has stopped. Liquid 7 won't help the tater bugs, have to pick em off by hand or just squish em. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

you can't even shoot a BB gun in this town.  I have 2 pecan trees and an oak that draws them in.
I surrendered to them after a 3 year battle.

Here ya go Bugeye. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsu_eaOdXIM Give them back to the neighbors.

Been 3 weeks without rain here and in the 90's. I've been having to water every 2 days for an hour and a half. Probably would have been cheaper to buy from the farmers market this year as apposed to what the water bill will be.

Bugflipper,
careful, you may be over watering.  I'm not there so I can't say for sure, but keep in mind that the roots go to where the water is.  If the moisture is deep the roots will go deep.  By watering more than once per week you encourage shallow root growth.  Most garden plants need 1 inch of water (or rainfall) per week.  Any more can actually be harmful.  I actually can't water that much due to the clay soil I have.
