Check this out. 67 billion a year, and for what!?

How could an agency that doesn't really do much expand to this proportion?

I have heard it reported by right wingers that the agency has about 45000 employees, and that seems to be grossly exaggerated. Foes to show that you have to look stuff upmfor yourself.

Cause more problems than it fixes by about a 10 to 1 ratio.

Local control is still the best solution, but rapidily vanishing.

By their figure's, that works out to over 4.7 million per district.And, that's not including the local tax's that the property owners pay either. Not, including the extra 100billion that is promised by this administration. With their figure's, if the employee's were paid an average of $60,000 per year, that's over 25 million, so it would cut the money 67.3 billion down to 67 billion.
Looks to me that it keeps the 4200 college educated idiots from finding real jobs! Wonder what they'll do if we get a real president in office, and cuts some of these govt. welfare workers so called jobs?? gypsyman

it's sole purpose is to collect your money, keep a large chunk of it and dole it back out where it should have stayed in the first place.
leave education to the states.

The Department of Education just executed a SWAT raid on a family looking for a woman who owed money on student loans. I read a link from another forum recently. I'll try to find it later and post it here.

A couple of years ago there was some buzz when it came to light that they bought a sizable number of Mossberg short barreled riot guns (short enough that they aren't available in your local store

). Big question being "why does the Department of EDUCATION need sawed off shotguns?" Seems they need them to kick down doors like any other military force.

Why? Because it wouldn't make sense for a government agency to do what it insists everyone else do. Schools are gun free zones, therefore agency must be armed like gangsters.

I went back and found the thread where I read about the DOE SWAT raid. The raid was part of a fraud investigation, not for a delinquent loan. I opted not to link to the original article because I don't want to repost the partially incorrect information.

I still see it as a problem that the Dep of Education has a SWAT force at all. They are a Federal agency and they do investigate some fraud cases. Cases where the Federal Government has been defrauded should fall to the FBI, who already has agents on the books. There is no sense in creating more armed forces within the beurocracy and no sense in arming the Dep of Education at all.

It is one of many Government agencies that's in need of going away.

US Fish and Wildlife Service
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
All the farm subsidy programs under the Dept Of Agriculture

Many need to be cut drastically:

Dept of Agriculture
Dept of the Interior
US Park Service
Dept of Commerce

Most of that money goes to consolidating other federal student loans. Right now DOE is pushing to "buy back" most of the loans from their GSE's. (SLMA, USA Group, MOHELA, and hundreds of others.) This is money that DOE has "guaranteed" to these lenders and by consolidating the loans it makes it easier on the borrower because they only have one loan, locks in their interest rate at a historic low, and removes the "default" status if they are there. It benefits DOE and the tax payer because corruption was and is rampant in they system and since DOE is responsible for those funds in the long run, they might as well make the money off of them.
