GPR Nipple Frustration
« on: December 20, 2003, 01:08:34 AM »
Hi all,

Has anyone else been frustrated by the short nipple on the GPR? It seems that nobody locally (SE New York) carries the replacement nipples. I have been thinking of adjusting my hammer to accept 'normal length nipples'. Has anyone else done this? I can get replacements through the mail, but I like to shop locally - it keeps the little guy in business.

I deal at a couple of local shops, and if they don't have something they, order it in for me. The small shop has to have good service, or it will not survive.

I haven't had any problems with the nipples on my GPR other than remington is the only cap that seems to fit it. Any others I have used have been loose and will fall off if you don't pinch them before putting on.

Have them order you a Hot Shot nipple in 6x.75 . Order a couple so ya have an extra on hand. They last many shots but any nipple will burn out over time and might blow the hammer back. CCI mag caps fit tight on this brand nipple. GOOD LUCK!

Thats the problem, the GPR hammer is setup for the shorter Lyman nips. The HotShots ,RedHots and others are longer so the hammer contact with the nipple is at the extreme upper edge of the hammer...if you'r lucky. Plus when you go to half cock the hammer may still be making contact with the nipple. I think thats why Lyman recommends against using the HotShots. Theres a post in the "Campfires" Muzzleloader section regarding tweaking the hammer posted by RollinB,hope he doesn't have copyright protection and sic a pack of lawyers on me!
"To "tweek" the hammer it must be removed from the lock "AFTER" make'n note of "how much" and in "which direction" it must be bent.
Clamp the hammer in a vice along with a piece of wood represent'n the nipple for a "reference point". a vice-grip or cresent-wrench can then be used to carefully bend the hammer so thet the "hammer-nose" lines-up with the reference-point. Avoid "bending" too much, by try'n it on the lock itself to see how much progress yore make'n. It's possible to git it "right" the first try,.... jest go slow, and think everthin out so thet you don't have to "un-bend" the hammer if possible, cause "un-bend'n" is usually what will create a fracture in the metal.'
I don't know if this will help the halfcock problem any. I'd use a peice of cloth to protect the hammer from getting dinged up by the vise and/or vice grips.

Instead of taking a chance on breakin' yer hammer, why not make changes to the nipples? I've done this many times: Chuck the nipple in a drill, and spin it against a fine toothed file to take it down to proper length. When you do this it will change cap fit due to the taper so after achieving proper length put the file against the side of the tube and spin it to change the diameter of the tube, going easy on file pressure and stopping frequently check cap fit. When you've gotten length and cap fit where you want it, use a piece of emory cloth to polish it up.

I have a couple of custom guns that I have to do this for every time they need a new nipple because no one makes them to fit these these guns.

BTW, if yer gonna bend the hammer do it right and use heat, or take it to a smith! No sense in snapping a good hammer in two!

:)  :)  :)  :)  :)

Aside from the GPR in the subject line - this sounds like a topic for my wife's La Leche League breastfeeding discussion. :)  :)

No wait, that's nipple confusion.  That's when an infant gets confused between mother's nipple and a bottle nipple (the two sucking methods are very different).

So anyway, if your GPR is suffering from nipple confusion, you need to take away the bottles and pacifiers for a few weeks.  This will allow your GPR to learn only one method and not get so "frustrated".

Hope this helps.
