KIK and the Chrony
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:40:21 PM »
Had a couple of minutes and some paper patch and greasers loaded over KIK powder.
The patched bullets .444 from the Old West mould, cast from 20-1,508 grs. patched in paper mill 9# cotton onionskin.
72 grs of KIK 2f compressed, .4 from the case mouth ,.060 1/6 lubed felt and .030 fiber wad with the bullet seated just short of ,2 into the case.
 Velocity averaging 1208,
Same components with 72 grs 2f express averaging 1210.
Fowling with the KIK is a slate grey compared to the shiny black of the express.
Don't know what the velocity comparison with the greasers was as the next to last patched load heaved the wad column thru the chrony's lcd.  :?
Accuracy was good at 200 off the xsticks with 3 shot strings into clover leafs

Sounds like some good results! That KIK is some powerful stuff. I am unclear on the wad stack - is that a .060 card, then 1/16" felt, then .030 card? Do you wipe between shots or shoot dirty? I have been shooting a .444 PP bullet in my muzzleloaders, but haven't tried it in the 45-70 yet. You are getting me inspired to start trying it there. I have a C. Sharps rifle, it'll be interesting to see what that throat does to a PP bullet.

It was a typo, should be 1/8 inch lubed felt wad. I get those from Sagebrush.
I shot both wiping and dirty.  Shooting dirty the deviation was pretty big, but wiping it was within 3 fps.
My rifle is a C Sharps with the regular chamber. I don't crimp. I have a lyman 45-70 die that sizes the cases down just perfect for a tight fit on those .450 wrapped diameter bullets.  I seldom get any paper rings. I've also adjusted the mould down to cast a 1.1 inch bullet at 420 grs like the original loads and have ran 10 straight no tube and no wiping and still kept them on the 225 yd gong off hand, and had no paper rings afterwards.
Unless something happens to make me think otherwise KIK is going to be the powder to go to , if you were an Express or Cartridge user that Hogdons left swingin in the breeze at the start of the shooting season.

Forgot one of the big factors to go to KIK on, is the price, it's half the price of Swiss, and cheaper even than standard goex, but delivers express performance.

When I tested it against GOEX and Elephant in several calibers of muzzleloaders I found that under a 'scope it was more uniform in grain size and the fouling was 'better'. It took about 20% less KIK to get similar velo than GOEX and about 20% more Elephant. With all three under a scope the KIK was picked by others thinking it was the (assumed) higher quality GOEX.
FWIW, 1F EL was a nicer one to shoot in a 45-90 or 120.

All the elephant powder I ever shot was some of the nastiest foulingest crap a person could find. Accuracy with it was good , but the fouling was just horrendous.
That's the thing that's so good about this new batch of KIK it's super clean fouling.

Do I remember correctly that KIK is supposedly made with Willow charcoal?
It also seems I recall something in the old Ned Roberts 'The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle' book that the charcoal BP is made from has a big effect on the residue, and that the old Hazards (Curtis & Harvey?) was 'moist' burning, leaving a fouling that would nicely wipe out. We arent the only ones at the range who have commented on the hard fouling in the muzzleloaders in the lower 6" of barrel with the GOEX; speculation is that the formula used since '9-11' and the rebuild of the GOEX facilities has changed the powder.

I don't no much about who uses what charcoal and for the most part don't really care.
I do know that the Curtis and Harvey of the 1970's isn't what some think it was, I also don't see much difference in the Goex I have left from the 70-80's and the 2f of a year or so ago.  The regular 2f just simply wouldn't give me the accuracy that express or Cartridge would. Now the Hogdons has seen fit to discontinue the 2 powders most bpcr shooters that used Goex turned to we need to find something else, and it's looking like KIK may very possibly be the finest sporting powder that this generation has ever seen.

Im glad you had some NOS to compare with, that is certainly what I was lacking, and that you are pleased with KIK like I have been. It appears your demands upon a powder are more stringent than mine were and it has proven the point.
Swiss is a great powder, by all accounts, but it, like Eley 10X for my .22 rifles, is a bit 'rich' for what I do anymore. Within that context I will not hesitate to follow your recommendation.

Another powder that I have shot and liked is the Schuetzen or Grafs which is Schuetzen with the label on the can changed.
I've shot Swiss, and determined that in my rifles it was overrated and overpriced..
