Scope for Lightweight (20 barrel) Ruger rifle
« on: December 16, 2003, 01:37:53 PM »
I found out my compact scopes are not long enough for this rifle; need at least five inches between the shoulders.  A 3X9 Leo doesn't looked balanced.  Any suggestions?

By long enough do you mean you can't mount the scopes or you can't move them back far enough? Ruger does make extension rings.

Won't Fit

Small scopes just won't fit.  I'm going to need a least five inches between the shoulders.  Extened or expanded rings take away from this small rifle.  All of the big scopes will work fine.  I'm looking for a compact that will fit and create a neat little package.  I know what the problem is, I just thought that one of you out there might know of the perfect scope for this rifle.

Razmuz, I have a Burris Signature 1.5x6 on my Ruger MKII .243 that should work (5.5" between bells). It's not a true compact scope but it would look good. The Pentax Lightseeker 1.5x6 has the same dimensions. (assembled by Burris with Pentax' glass) It has a smallish objective lens but is very bright in dim light, especially on low power. It is a very clear scope too. I've read the Nikon Monarch is not listed as a compact but one of the big name gun writers praises them for short action rifles. SWFA has the best prices on Pentax scopes. That's where I bought my 2x8 Lightseeker.

Don't forget some of the older scopes.  I have one on GB #14462414 that would look great on a Ruger 77 RL.  I just held it up to my wifes in 257 Roberts and it has plenty of tube length.  In fact if I don't sell the scope that is where it is going to go.  That rifle just looks better with a smaller scope.  I've got smaller scopes on most of my hunting rifles, either small variables or straight powers.  Give though to a straight M8 Leupold 4x.  Great scope and light and compact.

I HAVE A RUGER M77/22 HORNET, WHICH IS VERY SIMILAR IN PHYSICAL SIZE TO YOUR RIFLE.  I HAVE A LEUPOLD M8 4X33 SCOPE ON IT.  IT LOOKS AND WORKS GREAT.  THE SCOPE IS VERY MUCH IN PROPORTION WITH THE RIFLE.

I'm checking out all your responses.  A 2X, 4X or 6X would be great for hunting and is all I really need.  However, my eyes are so old I need at least a 7 power to sight in with.

you might want to look at the old leupold vari X-2,  in 2x-7x if you need at least 7x.  Sometimes you can find them used for a decent price, check out e-bay.  Good luck

I just checked out a Redfield 2-7 Widefield I have.  It is 11.75 inches long and has 6 inch ring spacing available.  I don't know about any of the new scopes that are available now.

You could try a 2x7x32 Bushnell Elite 3200.  Although not a true compact you'll get 6 inches between the bells and have a great scope to boot.  I really like mine.  T
