Had to take the Plunge into this
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:39:06 AM »
Just got all of the stuff to start reloading Black Powder cartridge for my Buffalo Classic. Well, not really all of it I am going to use up my supply of 300gr JHP to start then start lead cast bullets. I will let all Ya'll know how it's coming and do some range reports. I have used Lee dies for years for all of my other loading but now have a set of RCBS 45-70 dies. so I will see how it goes. By The way I have learned a ton of info from all the guys on this forum about not only this subject others as well, hands down my favorite forum and the first one I click on.

You will likely be disappointed with the jacketed bullets.  When you do go to cast try a 20:1 or 30:1 lead tin alloy.  The softer bullets seem to do best.  Good luck and have fun, don't forget to use a grease cookie.

If you load the jacketed bullets, clean the bore of any residual copper fouling, then make sure all the Black Powder (BP) fouling is removed.

A few years ago, there was a thread on the Shiloh Sharps site about loading BP and jacketed bullets. Kirk, the owner, said that he once sectioned a pitted Shiloh barrel via the band saw. The owner loaded BP and jacketed bullets. The BP fouling became trapped beneath the copper fouling and pitted the barrel....
