Pumpkin questions
« on: August 14, 2011, 02:13:24 PM »
2 Questions: Where can I get pumpkin seeds for the dull-colored pumpkins about 2' accross amd 6" high with bright orange flesh inside? Haven't seen any since traveling the lesser highways of NC and I just never get that way anymore.

Since we're harvesting pumpkins now (planted early to dry while the weather is hot), will they keep producing through fall? And would covering the first few feet of vine from the roots give the drying vines a boost?

To get the seeds you want you will need to learn the common name at the very least.  Then search all the seed companies until you locate what you are looking for.  Unless you get very lucky this can take a long time.

The vines die off as they end their usefulness.  If the fruit has matured on the vine it is likely over.  If there are root nodules already formed and you bury them with a good top soil or quality aged compost you might extend the vine life by a few weeks, assuming there is suficient water available.

Pumpkins store amazingly well if you can keep 'em cool and shaded.

Try the Willhite catalog.  I've had good luck with most of their products and they have a lot of the "old-timey" things.  Pumpkins are good to have in the Doomsday box and there are several good ways to store them.

Thanks, I'll give both ideas a shot.    Hadn't heard of Willhite. Have half dozen other catalogs, but only Rouge de Temp even looked close, and was an altogether different animal.
