7X57AI Range Report
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:21:52 PM »
Just shot my newly reamed 7X57AI so far looking pretty good. Only put it on paper at 25 yards and did a nice 3/4" group once  I had my zero.
I then started shooting at a medal groundhog at 325 and had no trouble hitting . So now I have 40 fire formed brass. Now I can get serious abouting grouping it at 100 and beyond.
I was using  165 gr. (Speer) and 4895 powder 39.7gr.    Later Tom ;D 8)

For sure I would NEVER use a 7X57 I want one for myself too bad to ever do that . So as Tim said I used an extra 7mm08 I had I did not know that you could do this until I saw that you could on the4 D Reamer website. They are great and Lee Die Co. assured me I could use their regular 7X57 collet dies to reload my AI. So now I have 40 fire case to try them out on. They said if it did not work they would modified my dies to work at no cost. We have two great companies here.

Tom, the 7x57AI from a 7mm-08 has been discussed many times, but I believe you're the first to actually do one, although I may have just forgot!  :-[ Now ya got me thinkin on doing my 20" light Handi, I'll have to do some calculatin and see it the gain in the short barrel will be worth it!  :-[

Ham,

I have reloaded for both 7 M/M08 and 7x57, the standard 7x57 is quite a bit better than the 7 M/M08 with handloads.

My top standard 7x57 high velocity loads in a 98 Mauser with a Douglas barrel 26 inches long.

154 grain Hornady, 2923 Feet per second.   Winchester 785 powder, compressed load
145 grain Speer,     2939 Feet per second.   Winchester 785 powder, compressed load.
145 grain Speer,     3037 Feet per second.   Norma 204 powder.

The above loads worked up 1/2 grain of powder at a time to each load to reach top velocity without any pressure signs.

Most accurate powders,  H380 and H4895 at .406, .448 and .419 inch groups.
W785 no longer available shoots under 3/4 inch.

Your fireforming loads seem mild for a 7x57 Ackley Improved.  I usually use close to full power loads when forming improved brass for the  Ackley improved rounds like the .257 Roberts Ackley Imp and the 30-06 Ackley Imp.   Haven't worked with a 7x57 AI though and it depends on how the improved chamber was cut headspace wise.
