2X or 4X scope

i was wanting to buy either a fixed 2X or 4X Weaver scope and didn't know which would be the best coice. I have a .308 and plan to be making most of my shots between 25-175 yards. Also who has the best price and do we have any sponsers here that sells them?

I'm old. I'd have to go with the 4X. The only way I'd go with a fixed 2X on a 308 is if I expected the majority of my shots to be at moving/running targets. And that would be very tough for me with a long barrelled handcun. But that's just me.

Google "Weaver" and shop it till you find your best deal.

Agree with "boo" on the 4X since you'll shoot out to 175 yards, and that the 2X would be better if most shots would be closer and at running game.   A better choice might be a 1.5-4X to allow matching the scope to the situation.

I too would vote for the 4x Weaver. I have one on a Ruger Stainless-Steel 5 1/2" Bull Barrel MKII and just love it. Great scope for the $$$.

Both would work, but personally, I would choose a 2X.  A 2X is easier to hit with at close range targets do to its larger field of view, and less magnified "shake".  At longer ranges, you will be using a rest, probably on game that is not spooked and moving, giving you time to place your shots with a 2X about as precisely as you could with a 4X.  If you can afford it, a variable would be a good choice for a handgun with the .308's performance range.

I have 2-6 simmons now and I don't really care much for it. I have heard a lot of good things about weaver scopes.

Get a Weaver 2.5 - 8 X 28 I have three of them and have never had a single issue with them. I keep them set on 2.5 while hunting so I can pick up game quickly because you never know were or when they will pop out of the ground. Once I find them I always have the option of turning up the power for precise shot placement. By the way if you are deer hunting try the Nosler 125 gr ballistic tips. They are awesome deer killing bullets, mostly BANG FLOP. I have these scopes on a 10" 357 mag, 14" 6mm-225 Win wildcat and a 14" 30-30AI which is nearly what a 308 Win is in a pistol.

Actually there was just a 2x7x32mm Burris LER listed for sale on another site quite reasonablly. I have a 2x7x32mm Burris LER Handgun Scope on my T/C Custom Shop Stainless 7-30 Waters Barrel and it is a good scope. Used they can be picked up quite reasonablly priced.

I have also used the 2.5x8x28mm Weaver Handgun Scopes in the past and find nothing to fault with them either. However the 2x7x32mm Burris does have a bit more field of view.

ordered a 2.5x8 Weaver instead. Tried to take a little from what everyone suggested. Thanks guys. There are good varible scopes and bad ones. I have used the weaver before but was a little turned off by my simmons.

IMHO, field of view is key in selecting a pistol scope for hunting.  What good is high magnification if a deer is standing there looking at you and you can't find him in the scope?  Been there, done it, got the empty spot on my wall.

Junior 1942, I learn this lesson a long time ago. You always have time to turn the power up on a scope but never have time to turn the power down when a deer pops up. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR SCOPE SET ON THE LOWEST POWER. You will have time to turn it up after you find the deer with the low power if you feel the need.

I prefer a 4x scope.  It's a nice balance between "enough" and "not enough".  The 2x just doesn't seem like enough magnification to me, and most of the time I don't need more than 4x.  Usually if I want more than 4x, I would like to have a couple of 100x if I could get it!  Just my opinion!

I find that a 2X makes things actually look smaller.  It doesn't but it seems that way to me.
