MAVERICK 88 practicality check
« on: May 07, 2010, 06:31:15 PM »
To whom it may concern:

Could someone PLEASE talk me out of installing a heat shield on my Maverick 88 Security 6-shot!  The gun is only used for home defense and close range boar in extra tight cover.  My wife tells me that this is just a "mid-life crisis on a budget" as I turn 45 this month, but was happy to see that I had'nt chucked my job so that we could all raise Alpacas [good thing I hid THAT brochure!].

Anybody? All opinions for or against are appreciated.  Perhaps it would help with the heat shimmers here in Arkansas when I go after summer pigs but I've got to be honest, most of it's vanity.

regards,
Jeff

the one i put on my son's mossberg was a certifiable p.o.s. after tightenin' til it bent and put a couple scratches on the gun still moved forward under recoil. also the dinky little plastic sights they put on them are worse than a joke. this was the one from a.t.i. don't know of any others or how they might work. my opinion and you're welcome to it. good luck with your "crisis" neighbor, bubba.

Happy up comming B day BTW ;)
I'll be 45 the end of June.  My midlife crises buys is deciding on which pipe tobacco to order. ;D

Aw, go for it! You know you want to. I've got one on an old Model 12 with a cut off barrel. Looks mean. I've got a couple of teenage nephews that think it's cool.

it may look cool but won't likely serve any good purpose......if you are protecting yourself and have fired enough rounds to get the barrel too hot to touch and the fight ain't over you have a lot worse problems than a hot barrel.......

Everybody makes a good point.  I always try to be sensible, but then I watch "The Wild Bunch" again!

thanks,
Jeff

if you had a real trench-gun with the real heathield on it that would be one thing. but the cheap imitation junk they make for the mossbergs ain't worth the time to put them on and take them back off when you find how junky they are. don't know if you could adapt a real shield to your gun or if you could even find one. my opinion and you're welcome to it, bubba.

I'll take your advice, save $40 and prevent a scratched barrel.

thanks,
Jeff

I have one on mossy 500 and have never had a problem ,Tighten then shot some and check and tighten again if needed .

Mine works great and looks really good on the gun... Enjoy and ATI products are just fine if you use care installing them or any after market product...
