Noise associated with cocking/recocking a contender
« on: June 12, 2011, 06:25:19 AM »
I'm considering purchasing either a contender or a G2 for hunting and some target shooting.  I prefer the look of the contender; however, from what I've read if the gun is decocked, you have to open the breech before you can recock it.  My question for those that use the contender for hunting is, how noisy is this and how big of a pain is this?  I opened the breech in a store but it is a completely different environment than out in the woods.  I've searched the forums and read through more than a few pages but I haven't noticed this discussed.

Thanks.

You can squeeze the trigger guard without actually tipping the barrel to reset the action. Even with your hand around the action it does make noise. For critter hunting I prefer the G2 or Encore.

Thanks.  Are there specific reasons you prefer the G2?

In my experience resetting and recocking a Contender frame is not anymore noisy than just recocking a G2 Contender or any other hammer gun.   Did it all the time predator and big game hunting with my Contenders, and not much gets past a called in coyote within close ear shot.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

With the G2 Contender you can let the hammer down and then recock the hammer without opening the action.
I have opened the action and recocked my old contenders without spooking deer before. I have killed two out of three doe traveling together once. Spine shot the first one between the front shoulders as it was facing me. It dropped in it's tracks and never moved. The other two ran up the trail a few yards and stopped looking back. They stomped their feet and bobbed their heads like they were trying to get the other "dead deer" to get up and come with them. I reloaded and killed one of the other two before the third one took off. I don't often have to recock because I normally kill what I cocked it on.

Many times I've let a deer pass at the last minute because I didn't like the shot and would have to reopen the action.  I'm concerned that the extra noise associated with opening the action will spook other deer in the area. Yes, cocking and recocking the hammer does make noise but I'm trying to minimize extra noise, unless opening the action sounds like a doe bleat.  Something tells me I would have read about it if that was true.

I have never considered it a problem. My experience is that movement especially with deer will spook them quicker than a sound.

I preferr the G2 for hunting because of this, but I figgure that the cock/decock thing with the old Contender is something that you would just learn to work around.

Not that big of a deal really.

gentlemen
There is no need to "open" the oldstyle contender to reset the trigger. Pulling the triggerguard back as if you were opening it will reset the trigger with a minimum of movement and a tiny bit of sound. It is no big dealbreaker.

Thanks for the information Elwood and Iowa Fox.  That's the first time I've read that you don't have to actually open the open it to reset the trigger.  I'll have to test that out next time I have a Contender in hand.
