Many states have laws against "Brandishing" a firearm.
If you pull a weapon and do not fire it, that is brandishing.
thus if you do not fire it, the question will be "did the situation
warrant pulling the firearm in the first place".
If you are not going to fire it, leave it in it's holster.

Sorry, but that's really bad advice! Many times the mere presence of a gun has been enough of a deterrent that using it wasn't necessary. Speaking from personal experience here.  Certainly a more desirable outcome than the use of lethal force. It should be a given that if you draw your weapon, you should call the police without delay and report the incident.  Anytime you have to draw, you should be prepared to use it if necessary, but not an absolute requirement.

SS , That's BS if you pull your gun and the attacker turns and runs should you shoot him in the back ?
I have been there done that and have a T-shirt all in a state that has a law that says not only we can't brandish a gun we can't even let it print.

Got to laugh about the 'back to the wall/door' thing.  Me and another 'old fart' LE buddy always jockey for the seat facing the door when we do lunch.  Old habits die hard - fortunately.  Actually, I think he just wants to watch the girls.  That's my excuse anyway.
