Potatoes are blooming now
« on: April 30, 2011, 10:28:40 AM »
My red potatoes are beginning to bloom.  I usually dig mine when the vines begin to die.
Can I double crop them or must they be planted early?

You must be in the south!  Plant some more and try it, My dad used to plant them late as July and got a crop.

Yep, I'm jealous.  I won't be planting potatoes for another 3-4 weeks.

Planted mine in March, the plants in both beds are 8 to 10 inches tall, no blooms yet.  If you have about 80 days before your first "Killing frost" try it, you just might have time.  They will need to be watered through any droughts though.

I planted Red Bliss and they are waist high with purple blooms.  Vines have not yet begun to die.  Probable have some small potatoes that could be sneaked out by now.  Caggabe, broccoli, and spinach are all gone.  Got some beautiful Bruissels spout plants but the weather my soon be too warm for them to make sprouts.

Lettuces are getting cut daily.  Same for Swiss chard. Tomatos are in all stages.  Got some waist high with bollms and put five little fellows in yesterday.

I live in Coastal NC.  I have a raised bed with irrigation that is only 16X16, but with planning, I can keep something in it nearly all year.  Don't have enough space for squash.  Friend gives me all the okra I can use.  Get corn from a farmer by the bushell a few times for freezing.  Same for turnip salad and collards.  Buy them in bulk and freeze.

Use a compost tumbler to enrich the soil and apply wheat straw to hold down weeds and concerve moisture.

My garden is theraputic.  Greatest return is satisfaction.  Doubt I save a dime.

I use to plant quite a few potatoes, but a potato grower by me sells them so cheap, there's no was inhell i'll go through all that work any longer.  He sets out two of these,

With 3 or 4 different varieties in them.  Put 5 bucks in the bucket, and grab a 50 pound bag...  He puts lots and lots of potatoes out every fall...
