My buddy and I spent the day fishing for steelhead, since the water's real high, didn't really expect to have a great deal of luck, but being early and cooler this time of year, figured we'd take our 17hmrs along in case we spotted any graydiggers(California Ground Squirrel), we've been seeing lots while turkey hunting, decided it was time to make them the target of the hunt! I slung my Sportster over my left shoulder while I fished. Second spot we fished has a nice oak flat above the highway which follows the river, so after fishing the river with no luck and no diggers, we went for a walk and got into a few, I got two and Jack got one, no long shots, 30-75yds or so for both of us. Fished several more spots, but didn't see any on the river's adjacent bank. On the way back we stopped at a place we've seen diggers before and they were all over the place, saw 4 before we even got the rifles out!! Jack got 3 with his Marlin before I could even get on one, but mine was a good one at about 50yds, did a triple back flip, would have loved to had it on film.
