Extra Wide Hammer Spur?
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:49:22 PM »
Does FA make a hammer for a model 83 with an extra wide hammer spur? Something like the .5" wide target hammers on S&W revolvers. It, to me, would make shooting my FA 44 Magnum that much more enjoyable.

Also I'd like to know if a FA front sight hood would fit my 10" barreled 44 Mag. It has a very tall front sight that is angled rearward from bottom to top. I thought about getting a sight hood for no other reason than to protect my front sight.

No extra wide hammer spurs. Gunsmith Alan Harton (Single Action Service, Houston) has attached a couple Ruger Bisley  spurs to FA hammers for my friend Robb Barnes. I know of no other similar work.
If your tall undercut "Silhouette" front sight has a notch at it's bottom rear, that notch is to hold the front sight hood on, and yes, it works.

My front silhouette sight has no notch anywhere around the bottom of the sight. My 44 is a 1990 manufacture, maybe they didn't do that then?

Maybe not, I don't remember when they were introduced. In any event, FA no longer offers the sharply undercut front sight. You can order an adjustable (for both height and width) screw-in post
front sight and hood from FA. The hood is designed to shade the front sight when target/silhouette shooting. It is not designed to protect the sight from bumps. Realistically, it cannot be used in a holster, nor could the adjustable post, without the hood ... of course the old sharply undercut front sight tears up holsters, too.

I'll keep these front sight options in mind and thanks for pointing them out.
No, this silhouette undercut sight shaped, I think, like a spearhead is not very conducive to holster duty. It does however work very well for what it is designed for.
