250 gr. Leadhead Elmer Keith load seems just right for pigs.  Very manageable lead bullet feels very substantial to the recipient while easy on the shooter.  18 gr. of 2400 or a little more is a good mid-range load.  Check the manual to confirm but I think you will like it.

i just killed my first pig a few weeks ago. the load was a 250 cast performance wfn at around 1060 fps from my 5 and a half inch blackhawk. the 300 pound sow is in the freezer and quite tasty.

I have used 240 JHP over lots of H110 on several. Works WELL! I would also use XTP's or Gold Dots if they were at least 240's. The 300's are also fine and so are 240 & up hard cast SWC's with big flat noses. Shoot well & eat well!

Oklahoma Lefty, I could share your handle.  I live in OKC and am left handed.  I spend a lot of time shooting right handed these days since I am right eye dominant.

I am a huge fan of the 44 magnum and have several firearms in that caliber.  I load lots of Hornady but also use the Keith bullet (250 grains) from Leadhead up in Kansas.  It is a flat nose hog load and with 18 or 19 grains of 2400 very easy to shoot.  And it lets us mimic the famous Elmer Keith who developed the 44 magnum.

Need to be out shooting more but this heat makes it challenging.  Just got back from backpacking 100 miles with Boy Scouts at Philmont but the weather there was mild compared to here.

Give a holler if you want to discuss 44 mag in more detail--I am not expert and am always willing to learn more from others.  Am a member of the OKC Gun Club, are you?

MM

Greetings MM.

Actually I'm right handed but left eye dominant, so I shoot left handed.

Yeah the heat takes the fun out of trying to go shoot, but fall is just around the corner :-)

I guess I need to try some of those Keith bullets from Leadheads

No I'm not a member of the OKC Gun Cllub, I live about 70 miles from OKC in the Pauls Valley/Ada area.

Yes I'd love to visit with you more on the 44 mag. Thank you for your helpful info.

I have hunted many hogs with the 44 mag in Florida and Tenn from 400 lbs to 125 lbs. I was fortunate to be on a lease with Lykes Brothers where we had to dispatch 200 hogs each a year because of the damage they do to pastures. The Ruger 44 mag in BH and SBH has been a welcomed companion for this for over 35 years. I have used the following jacketed bullets with great results and no failures. 200 gr XTP, 240 gr XTP 240 gr Gold dot, 210 gr serria and 240 gr serria. All of these bullets have done great jobs on hogs over a good dose of H2400 with a regular large pistol primer. However, I would probably go with the XTP or Gold Dot in at least 240 gr. I prefer cast bullets in the 44 mag and the  250 gr Keith bullet and 275 lbt wfn works very well also over a healthy dose of H2400 and reg large pistol primers. Hope this helps.

PS the 270 gr LBT has also accounted for two large asian buffalo with complete penetration on one behind the shoulder and the other broke both shoulders and was just under the skin on the other side.

Fire Fox that is some serious penetration with your 270 grain load. Pretty impressive.

I have been using the 275 LBT in 44 mag for awhile and have never recovered a bullet on hogs. The load is 21 gr of H2400 with a regular CCI large pistol primer. I was surprised very much as to the penetration of this load on the Buffalo. It seems to be the perfect combination of velocity, penetration and dispatching ability. The velocity in a 7.5 in barres is around 1465 fps. On the buffalo the Guide told me to shoot the first one behind the shoulder. When I did this the bullet went all the way through and hit the dirt behind him. The second shot I put through the shoulders for fear the bull would run or worse at least it would slow him down. The result of this shot he went down in his tracks. I truly did not expect this from a 275 gr hard cast precision cast bullet. However, I did the same thing on the second bull with the same results. The finishing point was from my dad of 83 , now gone, dispatching another asian bull with his 44 mag old 3 screw with the same load and same bullet with the same shots. This one is special to me because he is gone and had and used that 44 mag since I can remember. He always used it and wore it every time he hunted. He only hunted with that gun and only used it to hunt and always with cast bullets. First with the old Keith bullet and on his last hunt I convinced him to use the 275 for the buffalo. He was an excellent shot and excellent mentor and the 44 mag was the only gun he would use. I would bet he is in the hereafter still toting his old reliable 44 mag if he can. Sorry for the emotional note but he is my dad. By the way my mom also always carried her 44 mag of the same type and they always hunted together with their old 44s. Have a good one.
