Took the Sportster out yesterday
« on: June 19, 2011, 05:36:57 PM »
I hit the range yesterday. I hadn't taken the Sportster 17 HMR out in a while. I was getting lonely in the safe, so it came with me on this trip. I just got a Savage 93R17GV, so I wanted to break it in. Unfortunately I had a bad box of Hornady 17gr V-Max ammo. I had
a couple of hangfires and then had a squib load that stuck a bullet in the barrel. I forgot my cleaning rod, so the Savage was done for the day. Out came the Sportster. Ever since I got it about 4 years ago the Hornady 17gr V-Max always shot the best in it. For some reason that's not the case anymore. It was spraying them all over. I had a bunch of different ammo that I got for my Savage to try out. I started trying everything I had. 17gr & 20gr in all different brands. I found a winner in the Federal 17gr V-Max. I shot this 5 shot .700"
group at 100 yards with a 12 mph crosswind. I'm more than happy with that! The Sportster is a great rifle. It has always shot real well for me. I hope to get it out later this year and pick off some rabbits with it.

Great shooting buddy. I don't think it was the rifle that changed while sitting in your gun safe, rather the ammo that has changed. However it looks like you have found some current ammo that it really likes....<><....:)

Yea. I also tried some newer Hornady V-Max that I just bought a couple of weeks ago and it didn't group very well. They must have changed the recipe. ;)

I wonder if it has something to do with age too?
Can you compare lot numbers and maybe date stamp of the good vs bad stuff?
