Tried searching and got nothing but times, verses, and misc. load recipes.  I'm trading for a Marlin 36 30-30 and had some basic questions.  Aside from the 336 being a stronger design due to the ejection window vs. the slot cut for the entire bolt height are their any other differences in receivers?  Should a good condition 36 be able to handle any factory ammo?  Are there any issues specific to this model I should be aware of?

I am getting a scope with it, but was thinking of going to receiver sights.  Beside Williams, what others are recommended?  The only thing I care about beside the firearm being safe to use is its ability to consistently shoot under 3" at 100 yards from field positions.  Short of bore problems or a damaged crown, this should easily be doable with peeps.

Any advice or input on what to try and double check would be appreciated.

If it's not drill & tap'd don't do it.Plenty of 336's and ruined 36's for that. As to ammo,it will handle any factory loaded product from the main manufacturers. Go for itas for peeps I like the Lyman setupsIf it is D&T'd the Skinner sights look interesting..

It is already d/t with scope mounted.  If it is clear and functions properly, it will probably stay on at least one season.  I have just always thought a 30/30 with peeps would make an excellent utility gun.  Thank you for the reply.

If it's drilled & tapped for a scope it probably has the screw holes on the side for a receiver sight.  If so, the Lyman will work as well as the Williams Foolproof, or if you can find one, the old Redfield (my favorite).  If you are stuck with the scope mounting holes, the new Williams Foolproof or the WRGS (Williams Guide Receiver Sight) should work.  Then as has been mentioned, the Skinner sights are available as well as several other "ghost" peeps.

You will probably have to install a higher front sight.  I have used the old Sourdough Patridge fronts with Williams Foolproof rears on a number of 336s and Winny 94s.  Like you said it makes an excellent utility gun, every easily carried in the woods.
