Remington Model 581-S
« on: May 22, 2011, 04:20:39 PM »
Picked up a Remington Model 581-S bolt action today, in like new condition, for $160.00 plus tax. I'm not familiar with the model, but bought because of my confidence in the Remington name. Also because it's supposed to accept .22 Short cartridges. I feel the low report of the cartridge, along with the accuracy I expect to see from a Remington, should make this an excellent squirrel rifle.

Anyone have personal experience with this particular model? Are my expectations justified? Let me know the good, bad and ugly.

Thanks,

Cleburne

It should be very accurate. The 541-T is noted for great accuracy and it's the deluxe model...at twice the price.

Excellent rifle you bought, I have the Remington 580 (single shot) which wears a Leupold VX-I rimfire 2-7x 28mm scope and Millet medium rings. Handles 22 Short, Long and Long Rifle cartridges flawlessly.

My dad bought me this rifle at age 12 and I am now 44. It is my only rabbit/squirrel rifle. I even used it in New Mexico to kill a coyote and very large jack rabbit. Back then is wore a Weaver Classic rimfire 2.5-7x 28mm scope with the same Millet rings.

That Weaver scope with new Millet medium rings are now on my daughter's Savage Mark I rifle (youth single shot) which was used to kill a coyote in Michigan with 22 LR cartridge. That little Weaver has seen some coyote action while riding on two 22 rimfire rifles, so fun.

Can someone explain the meaning of my 581's "S" designation? What's the difference between it and a plain Model 581?

I have one my dad boght me in 1967. I still have it and it has survived all the things I did to it as a youngster.  It still shoots very accurately. One thing, the mags are becoming hard to get,so latch on to any you can find. I also have the owners leaflet it came with.

The "S" model, probably for "Single"(I have one) came with an adapter that covered over the magazine well with a solid follower to turn it into a single shot rifle if you want. You can of course feed one at a time anyway, but this let you put it in without falling through the mag well hole. The adapters are virtually  impossible to find and were plastic.

Saltcreek,

Thanks for the explanation. It's good to learn the "S" designation doesn't indicate I bought a lesser quality rifle.

Mauser98us,

Thanks for the tip. I've been thinking of picking up another mag or two, but the genuine factory mags are pretty costly at the online auction sites.

I have one, (model 581), with the detachable magazine.  It is topped with a Weaver 4X32 scope and has accounted for more squirrells than I can count, along with a few racoons and turtles.  Currently I shoot Remington gold bullet HP's sighted in for the short distances I hunt squirrells, 50 yds max.  I've owned this rifle for quite a few years.  The occassional cleaning is all that it requires. Wonderful rifle.

Thanks for the input Markc. I haven't had an opportunity to try out the rifle yet, but from all accounts I've read, it should be a tacdriver.  :D

Welcome Cleburne, Looking forward to a range/field report when you can.
PS. mine never shot Federal 40 gr solids as well as it shoots the Rem golden bullet HP's.   They also shoot well out of my new S&W M&P 15-22.
