When looking to buy.
« on: March 27, 2005, 10:00:12 AM »
Helo people!

I have a question or two about when buying an ATV or motorcycle. Today I went looking at some ATV's. I may be interested in buying one in May.

Do you generally pay msrp or can you haggle with the dealer. I am not experienced with the ATV world. What tips can you give? If you do not pay msrp how much less than the price listed do you pay?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

It's like buying a car.  Never pay list as there's room to deal built into the price.  How much you can save depends on where you live, what type of ride you're trying to buy and many other things.  You'll save anywhere from $3 to $3,000.  Not much help but It's all I can do with not much info.

Thanks Old Syko!

For anyone else giving input I will give a little more info. I am really interested in the Honda FourTrax Foreman 4X4 with 475cc. Its listed msrp is $6399. Or the Yamaha Kodiak 400 auto going for just under 6K.  I am in Maine, but will buy in New Hampshire.

I just bought a new ATV just before the end of last year so have just gone thru the process you are now. You can probably find the discussions we had on it as I was making up my mind what to get. I ended up with a Yamaha Bruin 350 4x2. Just didn't feel like the 4x4 option was worth $1000+ to me for the use I'll put it too. I did get the $69 Warn winch and kit tho.

I got mine out the door including the winch/kit and taxes for slightly under MSRP. I guess you might say I got about a $250 or so discount from suggested retail on mine.

The comparable size Honda Rancher was priced the same. I decided I liked the fully automatic transmission on the Yamaha and the extra towing and load carrying capacity it has over the Honda. I have forgotten just what I did pay on it but I think it was just shy of $4000 as I recall.

From what I hear the Kodiak will run ya about 51 to 54 plus sales tax.  No current info on the Honda.  Sorry.

Like GB mentioned about the $69 winch, check on any promotions either from the manufacturer or the dealer.

Well I have made up my mind. After a good amount of internet research I am almost positive I will go with the Kodiak 450. I have been hard pressed to find a bad word about other than some saying it lacked low end power. Anyone have one?

When buying new.. Competion is the key.. If another dealer is cheaper go there.. Dealers can cop an attitude like anyone else.. " They can sell it that chaep and make money" they will say. Well who care if they make money.. shop like a woman! but don;t buy any shoes. Unless they a red pumps.. I kinda like them.
