I look out of my North Merritt Island office window this afternoon, at all of the traffic on N. Courtenay Parkway (SR3), following today's last Shuttle Launch (estimated at over 1-Million visitors), and it strikes me that I am glad I am not out there in that.

+1 LO.     I don't like to get caught up in that congestion but on a positive note, my InLaws have a restaurant in CocoaBeach and they are at capacity whenever a launch goes up.   It has been great for the business over the years.
Now it is kinda sad knowing with the upcoming layoffs, the economy over there is going to take another hit.

Well wishes and prayers of safety to the crew of Atlantis!

I sat on my front porch in Haynes City, FL in '58 and watched the first critter go into space. I think it was a monkey but dat wuz a long time ago and memory is foggy.

It was a monkey. The Russians sent a dog so we had to top them with a monkey. Then monkeys in DC managed the program. Now look what we got.

Hard to believe the things have lasted so long. Even harder to believe that we haven't got something more advanced yet.

I remember cutting slots in the windshield frames as a young machinist at Rockwell International in 1984. One of the engineers told me back then that much of the stuff used in the SS was considered old-tech by the time the 1st one took off. He predicted there would be something to replace them within 10 years. That was back when aerospace companies had more money than they knew what to do with, of course...
