Pulled the radishes too soon
« on: June 18, 2011, 02:57:14 PM »
Because of the crazy weather this spring, too wet and cold and then right to hot and dry my French Breakfast radishes were five inches long and pithy in the middle as well as going to seed.  I pulled them and planted a row of cilantro in their place.  It turns out that I might have acted too soon.  I went to the local farmer's market this morning and found radish seed pods on sale.  Didn't taste too bad at all.  Something I might try nest year.

Could never like radishes....but can relate on other levels.  Hope the cilantro does well for you.

had some of my radish get pithy, and bolt and flower out.  I am just letting them go to see what happens.  What are radish seed pods??

They are the seed pods that develop after the flowers.  They look kind of like a miniature okra pod.  Pick them and eat them as soon as they fill out and are still green.

after reading this post earlier in the summer. i let 3 or 4 radish plants go to seed, they put off dozens of seed pods per plant.they were about the diameter of a pencil and a inch maybe long.they had  sweet but slightly hot radish flavor. ill bet they would be awesum in a salad.or maybe a stir fry type thing.

In salads with red wine vinegrete dressing they are awesome!!  I am also letting some go to try to harvest seed for next year.  Wish me luck, and yes they will be planted in a seperate "test" bed by themselves.
