I stopped by a fireworks tent today in search of some black cat crackers, and they were only selling them by the brick or half brick.  I asked the guy there if he had any smaller packages, and he gave me 5 packs of them for free.  :)

I ended up going over to a friend's house (who was firing binary explosive mortars and larger BP cannon), and, after unraveling the string of crackers I brought with me, got to fire my Seacoast Krupp Howie for the first time!  It was very fun, and I've still got plenty of "ammunition" left! ;D

     Gulfcoastblackpowder,   I'm glad to hear your collector Krupp got a chance to come out from under the glass dome!  We had one in the line-up too, but we concentrated on the 3/4" and 1" bores today.  I finally got a chance to shoot 3 pretty loud blanks from my Dominick made Dahlgren and caught two of them on movie clips.  Gary's neighbors added to the crescendo of booms and bangs until he made them pause after an ear-shattering bang from his Dom made French 75.  A good time was had by all.

Looks like a great assortment of "fun size" cannon! 8)

My first shot, I tried the green fused cracker (fuse end in the front, folded back along the length of the cracker), which shot the furthest - probably 40-50 ft.  No detonation.  (Don't worry about it - it was subsequently destroyed by another member of the explosives team!)

The second shot (grey fuse end toward breech, folded forward) detonated in flight about 6 ft out of the barrel.

The third shot (same configuration as the second) went a solid 25-30 ft before detonating, and was the best overall shot of the night.

I gave my neighbor a string of firecrackers for the 4th.  The LONG one with 1000 firecrackers.  Maybe tonight.

     Soot,   That's a really nice Thunder Mug pic you have there.  Even Mike said,  "Wow, we have to build one of those!"


      The short movie clip I have posted below is the third shot of the Dahlgren Shell Gun we brought to Gary's backyard on the 4th of July, 2011.  I started with 60 grains of FFg and worked up to about 200 which made the resounding bang shown on the clip.  I have been trying to think of a quantifying statement to describe the volume and decibel level of the blast.  I believe it can be descibed as slightly less than what gets your name in the news.  Another 30 or 40 grains and you might have local fame as described by the following:   Dateline Blah Blah, Colorado  July 4th, 2011  Local Stupid Man fired his cannon at his friend's house today blowing the bark off a nearby tree, dislodging a birdhouse just vacated two days before from the tree, knocking over a rowboat propped against the house crushing a section of perimeter fence and causing all of his host's neighbors to call the constabulary.
