Bear bullet 44 cal Saeco 240 grain vs lee 300 grain
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:03:03 AM »
Hi guys :)   Two questions.  I have a Saeco 240 grain plain base bullet mold and a buddy has a 300 grain lee mold with gas check.  I have to choose between these two at this point.  Which one?

Thinking about getting a mold from Veral in the wfn 300 grain and I know that would be the best choice but I do not have it yet.  Will it make much difference at 44 mag velocities if I purchase a gc or pb mold as far as penetration?

Thanks for the help,

i  would go with the  bigger  lee  with the gas check

i would get a 280 pb WFN [i have one]  or 300 grain pb  from vera;

  In general yes a 300 gr bullet will have deeper perpetration, if it is pushed at the same velocity as a 240gr. But alloy also has a lot to do with penetration.
  Those wiser than I say the GC doesn't help until the upper levels of velocity are sought. I shoot all PB bullets. But most of my 44mag loads are under 1100 fps.

either when cast out of the correct alloy will penetrated lenghwize through a black bear. Id pick the one that is most accurate in your gun at around 1100 fps and not worry about it.

I'm with Lloyd, choose whichever is more accurate. And I will add that a lot of 44 mag revolvers won't zero properly with 300 gr. bullets without a taller front sight. Keep this in mind too.

If you're shooting deer, the deer won't know the difference between the two at normal ranges. With full power loads, I'd expect total penetration with either bullet, assuming the nose designs are similar. For larger game, I'd feel more comfortable with a heavier bullet.
