Uberti 1873 Hombre...What say you?
« on: July 28, 2011, 08:03:22 PM »
I have been wanting a cowboy gun in 45 LC for some time. I see that Bass Pro is having a sale on the Uberti 1873 Hombre. $299.00. I know this is the lower end of their line, and the matte finish is not a beautiful blue, but what about the quality of the Uberti centerfire guns. Not planning on cowboy action competition, just a lot of range fun. I have seen online prices around $250, but with shipping, and transfer fees because I don't have an 01FFL it pretty much evens the price. Plus I've got a few bucks credit on my BPS Rewards to lower the price a bit more.

The Ubertis are decent guns. I've had several and all shared one thing in common. They all shot so far left they were pretty useless to me for any 25 yard or further shooting and all hit either high or low by enough to be a PIA for trying to actually hit anything I wanted to shoot at.

I recently picked up a new Ruger BH in .45 Colt. It has adjustable sights and only cost $400 out the door. The adjustable sights and ability to shoot hotter loads if I ever want to is easily worth the price difference. Your local dealer should be able to match that price on the Ruger if they will.

I already have a Ruger with adjustable sights. A Super Blackhawk 44 Mag. I have had it for 30 or so years, and have never really considered it a "cowboy" gun. More of a modern single action. My rimfire cowboy gun, a Heritage Rough Rider also shot quite a bit to the left when I first got it. A little old time cowboy technology, a piece of leather, and a modern pair of vice grips, and the front sight was adjusted to match point of impact to point of aim @ 25 yds. Elevation has been somewhat adjusted by the rounds I use. So I'm sure I can do similar tweaking to a Uberti , plus being a centerfire I can adjust my handloads to adjust elevation if the point of impact is too high, file the front sight if too low.

I, and several friends here, have had the Millenium, made by Uberti for Cabela's, mat finish, brass grip frame, low end revolver. It has been a 'suitable' cowboy gun that we can wear and use in the rough without worrying too much about it. Only one has really had timing issues on a couple of chambers, the others have been working well. Mine is good for windage and I just give it a little front blade for different loads I try out. Im happy with it.
BTW, the mat finish stripped off mine easy and surprisingly there was a pretty good polish underneath! A couple of degreasings and some cold blue gave it kind of an antique well used but cared for look.

Thanks, I think the Millennium and the Hombre are one in the same. I looked at one yesterday at a local gun shop. It had a very smooth action. A bit smaller than I expected, but felt good in my hand. The trigger was light and crisp, and contrary to posts I have read the hammer was not all that hard to cock. The Matte finish didn't look as bad as the pictures make it appear. Their price was about $80 higher than BPS sale price, and with the extra rewards points I have it would be more than a hundred bucks cheaper at Bass Pro. So, I think I'll add one to the safe. I haven't bought a new gun for a few months, and this purchase will help with the withdrawal!!! LOL

Short of the proper tools (range rod, etc. ) to check the timing, you can look down the muzzle of the EMPTY revolver while shining a small, bright flashlight in from the sides at the cyl/barrel gap and you can see the chamber mouth. With a little practice you can eyeball it pretty decently for timing as you cock and rotate each chamber inline to lockup, Just hold it straight and square and let the mechanism do all the work (dont 'help' it along. Try to cock it at about the same speed you would if shooting and just let all the pieces find their place.
Other than that all the typical checks you would do and if it passes still find out what their return policy is if it is unsatisfactory.

+1 to Graybeard.  Get a .45LC/.45ACP Blackhawk.  You'll not regret it.  You might need to get the throats reamed, but since mine had that done, it out shoots some match grade guns.  ;)

Again, like my Super Blackhawk, that's not what I'm looking for. Adjustable sights, special cylinder work, match pistol accuracy, etc. = NOT A COWBOY GUN!!!

Another Ruger worthy of consideration is the Vaquero in 45lc. Now that is a cowboy gun.

Completely agree, but they aren't 300 bucks either!!!  If I were going to use it for cowboy action competition I'd have nothing but the Ruger. For informal range blasting, if the Ubertis are decent it will do the job, and save me $200.
