Wow- 165.00 that's a bargain.....  ;) the extras are what bogged you down. I would have had to space the add ons out over a little time, but the investment ends up being the same, just camouflaged in over time.  But the 165.00 is a good deal.  :)  enjoy it.  thejanitor

You have to know yourself well when making purchases.  I can get excited about a gun, plan all sorts of modifications, make reloading plans, etc etc etc.  But I have learned to take things slowly, to give myself time to decide if I want to keep the gun first.  Make sure it works, make sure its accurate, in short, make sure its a keeper.  Then, I will start to enact my plans.  Scopes can cost, do I really want to scope it?  My most recent Handi was another 45-70, a standard synthetic.  I put a Williams peep sight on I had had from a trade with MSPRET.  I am now looking at a new from sight blade of some sort, something thinner but more visible, a brass beed is what I am thinking now.  But I have not done a lot of research into that yet.  Maybe a Limbsaver recoil pad is in order?  Hmmm.....

The problem is that I can take too long to make a decision, I thought about sending my 45-70 frame in for a 18 inch 44 mag barrel.  But now those are gone, hopefully they will return.

Tom, tell me about it.  We have two horses who are now a geriatric 26 years old.  Last week it was $348.00 for the vet for dental work.  I should, but I can't, shoot them.  It ain't gonna get better.

I can't begin to calculate the money I've spent this past year...new handis, reloading set, dies sets for all of them, brass, bullets, powder, scopes, rings, slings, swivels etc., etc., etc.  That's why I thought Jim was calling my name.

After the rifle/scope set up the rest is represented by the loaded cartridges you will make. Amortized down, over time and rounds, you will come out, minimum, at no more than the loaded factory rounds shot, and probably well better. I have done this, and was surprised how well I did; most of what I had in my head was the cost of 'this or that' and the paperwork and record was the real deal. Now I accept it as a given and dont get wrapped up in OC worrying about it  ;D ;D ;D .

I recently went through this with my .44 mag.  It's also one of the reasons my wife is PO'ed at me right now...  It's not as bad if you spread it out over a few buys.  It's the same amount of money but it doesn't seem so bad...  ;)

Personally, I would have just mounted the base plate on the rifle, then taken a scope & sling off one of my other rifles.  Tried it out to see how it shoots first.  The new stock set could have waited.  Then I would have slowly purchased the reloading equipment.
But since you already spent the money, just think of it as an investment.  An investment that you can enjoy over a period of time.  If you get tired of the caliber, you can sell it, and buy something else.  So bottom line go out there and enjoy your new investment. ;D

Compare what you spend on guns & shooting to what your buddys spend on golf or bass fishing.  "Stupid" is in the eye of the spender.

Junior has a good point there.  Most of my partners and associates either play golf on a regular basis, or they ski a few times per year.

At present, the joining fee for getting into a normal country club is about $10,000.   After that, you pay about $400 per month in dues, forever.   Of course, that doesn't cover the green fees or caddy fees. So, you can count on about another $100 every time you tee off for a game.  And of course, at the end of the day, all of those guys end up in the bar/grill at the club.  So, for a light meal and a couple of drinks, you can count on another $50.

Skiing?   If you fly out to the state where you will ski, and take your family with you for 4 days or so, you can count on about $5,000 per trip, and that's if you are really really careful.

So, don't feel too bad about spending a couple thousand a year on your hobby, so long as you can limit it to a couple thousand.

Regards, Mannyrock

What really makes bad, is that I play golf once or twice a week and fish as often as the weather permits. I guess it will all come to an end when I'm six feet under. But as for now, "THANK YOU LORD."

And, here is another tip, that sounds obvious but most guys don't do it.

If you have the urge to buy a new rifle, then that's OK, but always lawfully sell or trade at the time of purchase an older rifle that you've had in the safe for a while.

If you haven't used it in 4 or 5 years, then that is a definite sign to trade it out.

This will keep your collection down to a managable number,  consisting of only the rifles you really like to shoot, and greatly reduce the cost of your new buys.  Don't forget to sell or  trade the accessories for the rifle that you dispose of.  Most of us end up with boxes and boxes of stuff that we paid good money for 20 years ago, but which nobody wants to buy anymore.

And, having settled many estates, I can tell you exactly what your grandchildren will think of all of those Handi's after you depart this earth in 10 or 20 years:
"JUNK.  How do we get rid of all of grandpa's old guns, and how much can we get for them."

Now, they won't tell that to your face while you are alive, but believe me, that's what's gonna happen.  :-)

I lived on a farm outside of Memphis for 15 years, while I was in business, and made the stupid decision to get 3 horses.   Man, you talk about Stupid!

Those danged things cost me at least $400 a month, month in and month out, and that was when they weren't sick!

When people tell me that they are thinking about getting a horse, I tell them that what they will have will be a 1,000 pound animal, with the emotions of a two year old child, that goes into tantrums at the drop of a hat, and tries to kill you in the process.  Sound like fun?

I now live in a rural subdivion.  A rich guy bought one the bigger houses with a 12 acre lot two years ago.  The lot was only about 4 acres of pasture, the rest being in woods.

Of course, he said he wanted to buy two horse "for his girls."   He had never owned horses.  I told him that it would be the biggest mistake of his life, that he didn't have even half the pasture he needed, that he would be buying, hauling, stacking, unstacking and feeding 45 pound bales of hay all year round, and that there would not even be any room to ride.

He snuffed me off, acting like a know it all.  He then bought two huge thoroughbreds.  I watched as his girls took care of them for about 3 months, and jumped the horses over some white plastic pipe a few times, and then they got interested in soccer instead.  He then spent the next year and a half crossing fencing his 4 acres into 1 acre fields, and trying to rotate the horses to a new one every day.  All went to mud.  And he and his trophy wife were out there every danged day, hauling hay bales and feed buckets around.

A truck came about two weeks ago, and surprise surprise, took the horses away.  (I forgot to mention that before getting the horses, he had an oak horse fence built around the edge of his entire 12 acres.)

I'm bettin that this little adventure cost him about $20,000.

Next time I see him on the road, I'll pretend that I don't know the horses are gone, and say "Hey, how are the horses doing?"  :-)

I guess I'm lucky our two horses only cost about $280/month...  Can't even ride the dang things much but it keeps the wife semi-happy to have them around.  Sure wish someone would steal them...

I went the other way !  I've had all these 45 cal cast bullets, dies, large pistol primers, and powder I would never use in anything I have now. What to do ? What to do ?  I bought a 45 cal Classic Carbine for $250, a peep sight for $42, and now I'm looking for something to carry it in ! More $$$$. When will it stop ????
