Michigan is leading the way in prosecuting law breakers. What are these people thinking?  Growing vegetables in their yard. ::) This just leads to more serious crimes.....Like owning a gun, or actually shooting it! This must be nipped in the bud."Pardon the pun"

A Michigan resident is facing up to 93 days in jail for planting a vegetable garden in her front yard, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.Julie Bass, of Oak Park, Michigan was first given a warning followed by a ticket and now she is being charged with a misdemeanor for her simple front-yard garden."I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley. The city is claiming that the garden violates a city code which states that front yards must consist of suitable, live plant material to which Bass responds, "We think it's suitable.""They say, 'Why should you grow things in the front?' Well, why shouldn't I? They're fine. They're pretty. They're well maintained," Bass told the station."I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me anymore, but then there's no telling what they're going to harass the next person about," continued Bass.A pretrial is scheduled for July 26 and a jury trial could be next.

HEH, what next. Truthfully she sounds like she's showing it off being out front but it's none of the towns business. When I lived in Lou Ky 30 yrs ago I got a citation from the city in late Nov for weeds in my back yard. They were going to sue me. I told them that I knew that city folk were not too bright but I thought even they would know what dead tomato vines and corn stalks were. They dropped it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Victory Garden
Quote
Victory gardens, also called war gardens or food gardens for defense, were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted at private residences and public parks in United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Germany during World War I and World War II to reduce the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort. In addition to indirectly aiding the war effort these gardens were also considered a civil "morale booster" — in that gardeners could feel empowered by their contribution of labor and rewarded by the produce grown. This made victory gardens become a part of daily life on the home front.
Sad to see petty bureaucrats flushing our freedom down the drain with petty code enforcement stuff like this.

I would hope the police didn't have any real unsolved cases or actual crimes they could be working. Then again maybe real crimes are to tough for them to solve, so they use the default of citizen harrassment.

I get livid every time I see the government telling people what they can or cannot do on their own property.  As long as it doesn't endanger someone else, what business is it?  Enough is enough.  When someone can't plant a garden or fly a flag it's gone too far.

If my neighbors penned hogs 10' from my back door, I would be upset, but still don't think it's the government's business.

Here we have county zoning. Neighbor down the road had a beautiful dbl wide trailor an decided to build a new house. After it was built I got a letter from county planning and zoning wanting to know if it was alright with me if they kept the dbl wide for their disabled daughter. I told them it was none of my business or the county's what they did. We are supposed to buy building permits for everything. I wish I had a bunch of money, I'd build a house back by the woods without asking their permission, especially since it's over 150 ft from the road, which would require spcl permission. A lot of folks left the county for this reason.  GRRRRRR, I hate P&Z. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

A politician asked me years to support P&Z, I told him NO. He was shocked and asked why. I told him it was simply designed to make the rich man rich and the poor man poorer, besides adding $ to the county coffers. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

It's none of the state's damned bidness what a citizen grows in their yard.

Some here would disagree, of course.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Actually gardening was pretty much outlawed nationwide when Obama signed the new food safety bill S510. My senators and congressmen claim they had wording put in the bill to protect small farms and gardens. Then I heard someone cut it back out at the last minute. With 14,000 FDA agents to enforce the new law we may see a lot more of these cases. You really need to watch what your law makers are doing. Did you know they ate going after Amish farmers with SWAT teams for selling raw milk?

Okay, I work for the Government (with a BIG G).  Part of my job is to make sure that contractors follow all the rules which our elected representatives (that is both the House and the Senate) have put into law.  Many of these rules came about because somebody, somewhere, found a way to cheat the system.  Others are there because a group of voters wanted to tell other people how to live.  The politicians didn’t hear opposition to what was proposed so they assumed it was what everyone wanted.  P&Z is a prime example of this.

And once the rules are in place, it is very hard to change or remove them.  If I had my way, the Constitution would set a sunset limit on every law passed in the land of say, 25 years.  Then when a law expired it would have to be looked at and voted on if it was still needed.  If it was not doing what it was supposed to, or if there was overwhelming opposition to it, it would not get renewed.

Please remember that most government workers are trying to do what they were hired for.  If somebody down the street from this lady called in a complaint about her garden and it violated the rules set down by the county assembly, someone from P&Z, whether they want to or not, has to tell her she is in violation and what the penalties are.  I have been in that situation where I didn’t agree, but I still had to enforce the rules.

I have seen this article in other places, perhaps the city fathers will get embarrassed enough with the negative publicity to change the rules!
