I must like a challenge.

I called the shop today and ordered a nickel 45/410 Survivor. Yep... the red headed stepchild of the Handi family. I know they don't shoot worth beans and they are a poor excuse for a combo gun but I still had to have one. ::)  Maybe I just have a soft spot for the underdog and I'm hoping I can get it to shoot. It'll be in sometime next week so I'll keep you guys updated... wish me luck. :D

Good luck. Red hair aint so bad, You just have to remember not to expect the same from each kid.... Some struggle where others thrive. A lot depends on your perspective.

Hmmmmmhh????? How to make it shoot cast lead better???  Get the bullet close or touching the rifling might help.  Trim a plastic/brass 410 hull to the correct length for you chosen .452" lead bullet, nice slow powder, neck turn the 410 hull to get the correct OD for your chamber with the loaded 45 cal bullet.   I know this works on a 44 cal rifle, don't have a 45LC/410 or I would try it for you.

Spanky: To go a step further on what bikerbeans said, I have seen articles on on the net on how to make 410 brass hulls out of 303 brass.  That way you could load either shot or bullets.  Sounds like a great big ole tinkering project to me.  Don't know if it will work, just sayin.....

I think I've read here that some people have had luck getting jacketed 45 Colt bullets to shoot well if they were loaded into the Ruger T/C levels. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that. I wish you luck, I'm a huge 45 Colt fan so I'd love to see you make it work.

I'm planning on trying some jacketed loads to see how they do... it seems that most of the bad reports have come from folks who are using cast bullets and have ended up with poor accuracy and leading. I'm also thinking of using 460 brass to get closer to the rifling. I think Gendoc uses 460 brass in his tractor blaster with good results. Doc... where are you when I need your wisdom?? ;D

Maybe you're just a masochist...  ;D   Sorry, I couldn't resist anyway good luck getting it to shoot right.  I always thought blowing the shoulder out  .303 Brit brass to put the bullet in a better place a worthy idea but be sure and use Trail Boss powder...

I read some stuff about using 444 brass too. It'd be nice if someone would just make some 3" brass 410 cases. ::)

The brass .410 cases made now aren't up to the pressure of even mild .45 Colt loads and expect any reasonable case life.  Making .410 cases from rifle brass is the best way to get cases that will stand up to repeated reloads...

I am fairly sure that the 45/410 H&R barrel is shotgun (mild) steel so you are pretty much limited to the SAAMI pressures of the 45LC or 410 bore.  I read a bit on the 450 Mongo in the T/C contender and I think those barrels are CF rifle quality steel so their data would not be advisable in a shotgun type barrel.  Good luck with your project and let us know how it goes.  I hope you are successful as I have been looking for an excuse to buy one.

I'm not one to comment on the Survivor since I have never owned or wanted one.  I am interested in how you make out with it and what steps you take to make it shoot.

I have a Pardner 22 inch .410.  When I take it for a stroll, I load it with 6s and carry a couple each of #3 Buck and slugs.  The slugs shoot well out of it from 25 to 50 yards and I'm happy with that.  I'm sure if I put rifle sights on it, it would be much better.

Pete I have done the sight thing on at least one of mine 25-40 is about the best you are gonna get . Spanky you seem genuinely excited about this so maybe I can help you out. I have not played with this 45/410 theory for a few yrs but I have owned 3 of them over time and what I found was what they work best for is TRADE FODDER. I don't remember how much I posted about it and I am by no means trying to bust your bubble but the best I was ever able to achieve was 3" @35-40 yards off hand which is what you will be using this gun for. That was with nice sights,beads ,red dot and even a 3 power scope. I read the Mongo stuff a bunch used Magtech brass .444 Brass, plastic only thing I never used was the Brit brass. Lots of powders ,jackets ,cast . What I was able to do I can do all day long with my 20" smooth Tamer or the smooth 26". Now that I beat that down I will say every penny I spent was worth it cause it was a blast and occupied much time trying. Pm me your address and I will send you a few Magtechs and I may even have some 444 buried below as it has been a few yrs since I was playing with it. Kurt

Just got back from the shop. I got some reloading supplies to get me started with the 45.
 
Got a Lee carbide 3 die set, some 250gr. XTP's, 100 new brass, Rem. large pistol primers and a jug of H110.
I also picked up a WGRS rear sight to go with a Remington front ramp.
 
Ammoguide lists some good looking loads for the XTP's and H110 so I'm gonna give it a whirl. :D

If you do a chamber cast on your 45/410, PM me the dimensions and I will turn you some 410 plastic/brass hulls to try.  I will just neck turn, it will be up to you to load them. I would also need the dimensions of the bullet you are planning to use.  FWIW, all 410 hulls are not created equal, some of the winchester hulls, with a proper chamber, can handle well above SAAMI 410 pressure specifications.  I don't think you will have any problem with the 410 brass/plastic hulls if you stay within the pressure limits of a 410 shot/slug load or a factory 45LC loading.

Im using plastic 24ga. hulls for my .577 Snider loads, 485ish gr. minie over up to 80gr. black powder (usually 60ish). I get 3-4 reloads before the battery cup gets about too loose.
