Eds Red, Hoppes No9 and your Bolt Action or Shotgun
« on: July 19, 2011, 10:08:57 AM »
I have been thinking about going to the trouble of making a batch of Eds Red for use in my rifles and shotguns.  Before I do, I want to ask if you have ever used Ed's Red, did you find it more effective than the "new" blend Hoppe's No. 9 that I can find for about $8 a pint?  It's all about cleaning effectiveness and economy.

Your thoughts please...

I've been mixing and using Ed's Red for over 20 years.  I wouldn't use anything else.  The first time I used it, I took the advise of another and started cleaning a gun that I thought was already clean.  At that time I had a model 19 S&W revolver that I'd been shooting lead bullets out of.  I was 100% sure it was clean.  I ran a sloppy wet patch of ER down the bore, let it sit for a couple minutes than ran a dry patch down and many thin spiral shaped strips of lead came out of the bore along with plenty more carbon fouling.

I recommend you do the same, start with a gun you think is clean and clean it again with Ed's Red.  I'm sure you will be a convert too...

What's the recipe for Ed's Red? I'd like to give it a try.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.
