Zulu,
Have you looked into any types of resin/plastic for the pour, or would it be cost-prohibitive?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Boom J,
No I have not.  I don't really know much about it.  My first love is still the wooden guns.  I don't need molds for them ::)

I spent more years than I like to remember building fiberglass boats and I think you could build a cannon for $100.00 or so and get 2 a week from 1 mold.

Your mold seems quite thick.  What did you do to make it so thick?

Zulu, what kind of paint did you use on the barrel?

I have had some really good luck painting concrete with POR-15. It goes on thick with a brush and once it dries you can't tell what is under the paint.

It sticks equally well to concrete, wood, steel, an skin as well if you aren't careful.

GGgaskill,
The mold was made by a friend.  It is stiff enough to not bend at all.  Around 1/4" thick.

Rickk,
The paint is nothing special.  It is Rustoleum Gloss Black.  That is the same paint I use on all my wooden barrels.

Zulu... those that have never tried POR-15 need to try it at least once... it is awesome stuff ;-)

It goes on thick and smooth with a brush, covers all sorts of surface flaws, and pretty much never comes off of anything that it touches as far as I know.

Well,
This one is off to a new home.
Only the barrel though.   Now I have an empty carriage. :(
Guess I'll have to make a new barrel. ;D

Zulu,

You might consider going to a rental place and renting a concrete vibrator for the pour...??  I know they usually get all the bubbles out from the form/mold face.

I cast a replacement concrete barrel recently.  It is my best one yet.  I refurbished the ship carriage my old barrel was on.  It has been sitting outside since I started this thread.
I wanted to put it in my truck and park it on the street to see if I could steer some folks to my website. It has been in my truck for 10 days now.  I unloaded it today.
This is how I loaded and unloaded it.  The barrel is around 225 lbs. and the carriage around 100 lbs.
I needed to figure out a way to do it by myself.  I made this crane with a swivel head that I use with a come-a-long.  It worked great! 8)

Very good, Zulu! You know, I've got to hand it to you, you're a rather ingenious individual. :)

Cannoneer,
Necessity is the Mother of invention. ;)

Ed,
I definitely work in metal.  Just not lathes or mills.  I do my work on a 313 lb. anvil and a propane forge.
Plus I built communication towers all over the world for 25 years.  That's metal work!! :o :o
