Limbsaver for a 44 mag handi
« on: July 03, 2011, 02:47:13 PM »
Does anyone know if limbsaver makes a precision fit pad for the 44 mag handi rifle with a wood stock? I have a slip on pad and it fits well, but I would like a screw on pad. The 44 mag puts out some recoil, it's bruising my shoulder. Seriously I need some relief, can anyone help?

No, they don't, just for synthetic stocks,  but there are some that may be real close, like most everything else H&R, they're listed in the FAQs.

Thanks Tim, I did check the FAQs before I posted but I guess I missed it and I'll check it again. I guess for now I will stick with my limbsaver slip on pad, it's way better than the stock pad. Mine is the Talo model and the 44 mag is a real thumper, but I like it very much.

Your .44 Mag is punishing you ?  I find that odd. I have a .44 Mag with the synthetic stock and recoil pad and I barely notice the recoil. I'm shooting Hornady 240 grain XTP's out of it right now. It could be that I'm used to be punished by a 12 gauge slug gun though !

I've heard that the laminate stock helps a lot with recoil too.

Yea, it's beating my shoulder pretty good. Maybe I'm just a little more recoil sensitive than most folks. I shoot a lot of 20 gauge shotguns and it gets to me also. But 12 gauge really fires me up... :'( The 44 mag did well today with the slip on limbsaver pad, it took the edge off it. I think all I need is a shoulder protector pad, I'm going to cabelas this afternoon and see what they have. These manufacturers need to put better pads on the rifles from the factory, it would make my life a lot easier. But anyway the 44 mag is a real good shooter, with open sights I was hitting wooden bowling pins at 100-125 yards. And gallon water jugs, theres not a whole lot left after the 44 hits it. It's like opening up a can of whoop ass... ;D

Lilhog,

Dont let those clowns bother you.  Make your 44 mag as comfortable to shoot as possible I say.  You dont owe anyone anything and you sure dont have to prove anything to anyone on GBO.  If Handi Rifles came standard with Limbsaver recoil pads, I doubt these guys would be replacing them with the hard plastic butt plates Handis used to come with.

LilHog,
Why don't you switch over to the synthetic stock.  The synthetic stock does "flex" a little to absorb some of the recoil.  There is also the ability to add a little weight into the stock, which also helps.  Finally, if you still want to, you can add a limbsaver onto the synthetic stock.

Everyone reacts differently to recoil, don't worry about the ribbing.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

You can easily add weight to a wood stock also, in fact it's ideal for a mercury recoil reducer or dead weight, both are covered in the FAQs.  That's all I used in my heavy kickers before I got the Leadsled for bench work.

I bought one of these and it pretty much solved the problem. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Recoil-Pad-Right-Hand/707171.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Drecoil%2Bpad%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26x%3D0%26y%3D0&Ntt=recoil+pad&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products They come in 2 thickness levels, I find the thinner pad worls wonders and keeps your shoulder safe. I took it to the range yesterday and shot 50 rounds of 20 gauge shot gun and 40 rounds of 44 mag through my handi's and Im not sore at all. I do appreciate everyones help.

I've followed this post along, and not meaning to be wise or sarcastic, I couldn't help wondering if perhaps you weren't snugging the rifle butt into your shoulder.  A loose hold will whomp you.  Another thing is you should be relaxed to roll with the recoil rather than push against it.  I shoot .45-70, .445 and .500 with the factory pad with no ill effects.  I wouldn't want to sit and poke out 50 or 100 of them.  Felt recoil is usually greater for me when shooting off a bench.  I think you're more rigid in that position.

Petemi, I am shooting the 44 mag off a bench and part of the problem is the LOP, at 14.25" it is too long for me. My normal LOP is 13" and it makes a more comfortable shoot for me. I do keep it tight to my shoulder and I have been shooting for several years, recoil just bothers me. I've ordered a shorter stock for the gun and that along with the shoulder pad I just bought should make the 44 mag a joy to shoot. I shoot a lot of shotgun and they all have 12.5" to 13" LOP all 20 gauge and I seem to be ok with that. If a shoulder pad is what I need and works, I will be sticking with it.

+1 on that tensing up in anticipation of a shot, especially after it has bit you. Bench can really get you that way, but so can offhand if you just get used to tensing up before the shot.
What works for me offhand is to pull the butt firmly into my shoulder, keep loose, and hold the front end firmly, rolling back with the shot. On the bench you may have to adjust your posture to a more upright position, not leaning downward and into the gun, which only makes you more of a backstop for the recoil.
And I totally agree that you do what works for you.

For some reason shotgun shooters seem to be more honest about recoil than rifle shooters.  LilHog, you are aproaching the recoil problem in the right way.  You cannot shoot well while enduring pain, fatigue and flinching no matter what anyone says.  It simply cannot be done.  As a shotgun shooter I am sure you know the importance of proper gun fit.  Go ahead and cut that stock, pack in some lead shot for weight and have a gunsmith grind and fit a good recoil pad.

When I started 600 yd prone service rifle competition I shot poorly.  Recoil is not an issue with the AR15 rifle.  The problem was I could not maintain a comfortable prone position during a 20-shot string of fire.  The discomfort was distracting me from keeping proper sight alignment and wind reading.  I kept working at it by adjusting my position and sling until I got it right.  Now my scores are competitive with some of the Palma shooters.

Good luck to you LilHog.  Don't give up.

Limbsaver makes a prefit pad for the synthetic stock, unfortunately not for the wood stock tho, so why would someone have a gunsmith put a pad on a synthetic stock?.....Unless is was before Limbsaver offered it (2007), or to use the less expensive grind-to-fit, but the gunsmith's charge would far outweigh the cost of the prefit pad which is a bolt on.  ???

Likely before they were available, or someone didn't check with Limbsaver.  ;D  FWIW, looks like they did a good job tho.  ;)

I am old and short and have enough rods and screws in my back to build a rifle. I am really recoil sensitive.  The long pull on my 45-70 with the synthetic stock was killing me.  I ordered a youth stock from H & R and called Limbsaver and asked them for help.  They sent me the pad that would come the nearest to fitting.  It is a grind to fit pad and it works fine.  Was not bad to install.  This combination really helps.  All I need now is to take the sling swivel off the forearm as it keeps cutting me.  I also use this reciever with a 223 barrel and a 20 gauge barrel.

In 2009, when I talked to the Limbsaver rep, I was told they had no pre-fit pads for the synthetic stock.  The grind to fit pad had the screw holes a little off from those on the stock, but it was no problem to make it work.  I ordered the pad directly from Limbsaver so I would be sure to get the one they recommended.

have you tried any handi with a different type of stock?
i bought a topper 158 30-30 with the original stock,it was nice to shoot with open sights then i decided to scope it,it was downright painful i think the height of the rings had a huge affect.i switched it with a talo topper 20ga with a monte carlo stock with hard plastic buttplate its like night and day.
i have a 44mag with a syn stock and factory recoil pad, if i sit down at the bench 30-35 shots really starts to bother me if i stand i could shoot alot more before i even notice it. 240gr xtp with a stout load of 2400

Let me defend LilHog a little... I have one of the camo stocked 44 mags (my first Handi) and the recoil is next to nothing. Five Handi's later, my most recent Handi is the 44 mag Talo Trapper... this baby has a little pop to it! It's not bad, but it's enough to let you know it's there.
