Jason,

The extra .001" in diameter of a jacketed 35 cal rifle bullet versus a jacketed 38 cal pistol bullet doesn't seem to make any different to my 357 Maxi.  With the same powder charge, primer and depth of bullet in the case the .358 Speer 180 SP shoots 1900 FPS and the Hornaday .357 180 HP/XTP is 1901 FPS out of my Maxi Talo Trapper.  One would suspect the larger diameter jacketed bullet could raise the chamber pressure but other things like jacket material, Jacket thickness, core composition, length of bearing surface etc. come into play.  There are lots of folks shooting the .358" jacket in their Maxis and I haven't heard of an issue.

One thing to consider is the 200 grainers are maybe a bit heavy for the 357 Max cartridge.  It would seem the general consenus for this chambering is the 180 grain bullet is optimum.

I use the .35 cal Hornady SSP's like they're going out of style in my Maxi's.

A advised NO problems shooting the .358 in your 357 Maxi. ( or mag)

Try the 200s and see what you find. I had OK accuracy but poor vel with the 200 FTX last year when I tried it. Thing is that SSP and XTP Hornady bullets are so damn good I see little reason to use anything else.

A heavier slower bullet with OK accuracy, there is nothing wrong with that for an old guy like me....<><....:)

Generally speaking I agree with ya Pete.  Ut for me the Maxi is a hunting gun first and foremost. The vel attainable is in the lowest for most bullets above 200. That's my biggest reason for staying with the 180's. I am a firm believer in heavy for caliber projectiles. But the Maxi just accells with a 180... If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!

I too shoot .358 180 gr. XTPs in the Maxi, 158 gr. XTPs as a Mag, and 158 gr. cast as a .38.  My rifle dislikes lighter or heavier bullets.
