taper crimp die?

Starting to think serious about reloading 9mm. This will be my first time reloading  any type of hand gun, been doing rifles for years.
I'm not quite sure on this taper crimping for the 9mm. Is it a special die or does it come in the standard 3 die set? I have been used to RCBS dies, they come with a 3 die set but it calls the 3rd die a crimping die. Will it do both roll and crimp depending on set up?

most dies for autoloading pistol come with a taper crimp die only..

Hi,



I find that I need to crimp in a separate stage than seating.  If you think about it, when the last bit of crimp is applied while seating, the case mouth will try to dig into the bullet while it is still being pushed down into the case.  Not too bad on jacketed bullets but can scrape up a bit of lead on cast.  this can also cause issues with the OAL with different makes of brass if you don't consistently trim.

If you crimp separately, then the length will be much more consistent and less damage to the bullet. 


For the 9mm I have started to actually use a 357 mag carbide sizer to crimp.  I take out the decapping stem and just use as is. 

My press is a Lee classic turret 4 stage and works smoothly through all operations and is fairly speedy in making ammo.

So since the 9mm Luger is strictly an autoloader the 3rd die in the RCBS would be a taper crimp die?
I'll call them Monday and ask.

I would think so..look up the set at Midway or one of the other sites and read the description...

Pistol die sets are typically 3 die sets. The first die sizes and deprimes. The second flares the case mouth. The third seats the bullet and crimps. I prefer four die sets. I adjust the third die to seat only, and do my crimping with the fourth die. Cartridges that head space on the case mouth must be taper crimped. Most roll crimp dies are used to load revolver ammo.

Some older RCBS and Lyman die sets had roll crimps for all handgun dies.  I would hope that they have wised up by now and have taper crimp dies in their autoloader die sets.
Lee die sets have the correct crimp and come with a shell holder.

Get a 4-die set where the 4th dies is dedicated to taper crimping only and taper crimp after seating.  This is the way I do my 9mm ammo, and all my other ammo.

I have to agree with the taper crimp for ammo for a semi auto setup as the 4th die, I don't load for the 9mm but do load for a good number of cartridges and i have read that the 9MM has a slight taper to the case and the only die manufacture that has a die with the correct taper in a carbide die is Lee , You may want to double check . Also the 9mm is not strictly a auto pistol cartridge , you will find double and single action revolver chambered for the 9mm

Actually ordered a 4 set of Lee die today along with 500 bullets. With powder and primers I'll be under $150.00
Next batch will start to pay off.

Nothing wrong with seating and taper crimping with the same die, that was the standard for a long time until they figured out ways to sell us a fourth die.
Be sure not to taper crimp more than .003" or so. I use the crimper to just bring the case mouth back to straight.
