anyone have a 35-30/30 reamer?

I have my heart set on a 35-30/30 handi.Rather not purchase a new reamer. Does anyone happen to have one or know where I can rent one?

There are only two reamer rental sources that I know of, Elk Ridge doesn't have it either.  :-\ Maybe you can get enough members interested to share the cost of the one?

What is the difference between this round and a Herret?

Anything beside the Herret being trimmed back?

357 Herrett is a shortened 35/30-30 basically, Fred does have that reamer.  ;D

The .357 Herrett is shorter than the .30-30 case but not by a lot and it is blown out into an improved shape. If you did nothing to the .30-30 case but neck it up to .35 caliber you'd get no more powder space than the Herrett has. It is an excellent round with readily available loading data. It will match the .35 Remington ballistics and give you a rim which I prefer in single shot rifles.

Like the man says plus you get a much straighter case wall and extended cartridge life.  Way less tendency to stretch plus it reduces breach thrust from the cartridge wanting to set back.


It, or the old 35 Lever Power would be my choices.  The Lever power requires more case work and I have no idea where you would get a reamer anymore.  Have a Model 94 in this oddball that I got in a trade years ago.  Either one would be close to the same for downrange energy.  The Lever Power is a bit stouter as I recall.

.35 cal bore, chambered with a 30-30, or 30-30IMP, then neck/throat reamed to the right dimensions for the case neck & bullet combination. It is the kind of thing that was used years ago in 'piecing together' a chamber for wildcats when having a specialty reamer wasnt readily available for a notion. If you have, or can get the proper reamers its an option.
Seems somewhere recently I was just reading about something like a 30-40Krag case run into a 35Rem die to make a 35Krag??? If so, you could run a 35Rem chamber reamer after the Krag reamer to do a similar thing. I will see if I can figure out where.
Or just do the Herritt and keep it simple.........

The 35 Krag was mentioned.  This is a good wildcat and is virtually identical to the 35-303.  Another option would be to select one of the 45-70 necked to .357 offerings of years past. I don't recall the numbers but there are a selection of European 9MM rimmed cartridges that fall in this general area as well.  A little research would turn these up I'm sure.


If you're  set on using 30-30 brass as the parent cartridge your limited on powder space no matter which version you select.  Some of those listed above will offer more OOMPH if that's what your looking for.

I had thought about something like that also, but if I were going to ream anything it would be a Herrett I had one in a contender and it was easy to reload and a great performer. I still have my original 1970 load book somewhere here.

I have a 357 Herrett in a 16.5" barrel with open sights and it is a handful with full power Herrett loads.

I haven't run any over a chrono but I have shot max 180 and 200 gr silhouette loads from a friend who shot then in a 14" contender.  I never felt like I was plinking.  I have shot a coyote, a feral dog, and several raccoons, possums and a skunk or two with it.  It seems to bark with more authority and hit harder than my 357 max's.

I have a Handi rechambered to .358 Bullberry, which is the 30-30 case necked up to .35 caliber with the taper straightened out and a short neck. Has about the same case capicity / performance as the .35 Rem. It is a rechamber of a .357 mag barrel and it is one of the most accurate and versitile guns I own.
I believe GB is correct that rimmed rounds are a bit more user friendly in single shot guns, but my barrel is an ejector barrel that pitches the brass a good distance and if ya ain't careful ya gotta chase it.....This cartridge exceeds the herret by a good bit and will of course out run the 35-30-30. It shoots both .357 pistol bullets and heavier rifle bullets well and has plenty of punch for larger game at modest ranges. I can use .375 Winchester brass to form the case as well and have trimmed 38-55 cases and used them as well
If ya cannot find the 35-30-30 reamer perhaps the folks at Bullberry can get ya up and runnin with an improved version of that old round.
