Cannons for Kids
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:39:16 PM »
Was visiting my friend earlier this week.  I gave the kid K.I.S.S. Golf ball mortar N0. 1 some time ago.  After the CBCC I I also gave him a Brooks USA firecracker cannon.  So it was only appropriate we shot the cannons when I visited.

You're a pusher!  Getting innocent children addicted!  Why, before you know it he will be onto the hard stuff, half scale and maybe even (GASP!) full scale!  Then, what? N-SSA?  Knob Creek shoots?  Maybe even, oh the horror!, Greyling?

Have you no shame?   ;)

I can hear it now. The kid talking to a friend, "I'm up to 6 shots a day now!" Pretty soon he'll be up to a full can of Goex. Congrats, DD; start 'em young and they'll graduate to bigger and keep the sponsors busy building.

It was kind of funny...I told the kid I like mortars better because I can see the ball fly...he said he  had never seen the ball fly. He was lighting the fuse and running for cover and still had his back to the mortar when it went off.  Gave him adequate instruction to move away after lighting the fuse and then turn and watch...he liked that a lot better.

We also did some range testing. 25 grains would send the steel ball to the end of the yard--about 30 yards.  Same load and golf ball went into the east pasture about 40 yards.  30 grains put the golf ball over the east pasture where the goats were; about 100 yards.  We didn't think mom or dad would think it funny if we hit a goat with a golf ball, so we stayed with 25 grains.  We were shooting FFg, but I prefer Fg for this shooting.

Well yes, this is educational not recreational--and that's the story I am sticking to.
