You can fix that recoil problem real quick by just reaming it to .454 Casull.

I love my .45 LC and yes it is a dream to shoot and the fact that it's pretty darn accurate with just about any load I want to use, makes it my favorite go to rifle.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Yup, gotta get on the Casull reamer list, now's a good time, no one waiting once I get in back from Bobby.  ;)

Not as a Casull, the M158 cast iron frame is good for low pressure chamberings only, the Casull operates at ~65kpsi, about 4 times that of standard Colt loads, Colt +P(Ruger/TC) loads would be ok tho, but not Casull.

I better just leave it a colt I already have the dies and alot of brass for it already I can always use the 444 to push those pistol bullets at casull velocitys
handi rifles- 22 mag      22 hornet    223      7mm-08      308 chip shot     30-30 x2     30-06 shorty      358 cheez whiz     357 max     35 remington     375-08    410 rifled slug     454 casull     460 s&w     45 smokeless muzzleloader x2     45-70    50 huntsman    50-70 government shikari     20 ga.ush     12 ga.ush    12 ga.3 1/2     10 ga.imp.cyl. slug gun

444 don't shoot no pistol bullets, it's a real rifle I tell you. ;)

The std 44/240XTP might shoot well in the 444. But its not designed for the 444's atainable velocities. I suggest you switch to the MAG XTP for the 444 when hunting with it.

I agree with Tim, don't ream that barrel to 454, unless its on a SB2 receiver!! Even onyour 158 frame I would steer clear of the top "Ruger" loads. You can defineately safely improve the old cartridges ballistics some. I would just steer clear of the hottest loads.
