H&R listed as a "Top Prairie Dog Gun"
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:45:04 AM »
In the June issue of Outdoor Life Magazine (not yet online) there is a one page article on page 45 by Bryce M. Towsley in which he lists the top 4 rifles that are a prairie dogs worst nightmare. One of his picks is a H&R 1871 Ultra Varmint Thumbhole Stock model. For prairie dogs his caliber of choice would be the .22-250.
It's nice to see the mainstream appreciate and acknowledge these fine guns.

For 5 years running , my top P-dog gun was the H&R 223 BB , that little rifle kiled more dogs than I could count , for that matter the only bolt gun that I ever used on the little rats was my Marlin 22 LR .

Another one that was a great Go-To Handi was the tiny 17 HMR , it did very well out to over 150 yards as long as the wind stayed down .

I got to say my 204 Fluted has killed the most  followed by the 223 .This yr the new 22-250AI will get the man's share if all goes well with the loads. It just don't take a $1000 bolt gun to pop a bunch of those little vermin. Kurt

Im with ya boys.  I love my little .243 poodle punisher.  Longest kill to date for me was lazered at 412 yards.  75 grain v-max, winchester brass, CCI br primer and 40.7 grains IMR 4064 = 3,372 fps with the 24" fluted handi.  Trigger job and a good barrel lapping minus the last 2 inches and she is a tac driver.  Likes 75 grains the best, wont shoot 87 or 100 grains worth poo, never tried lighter than 75 grains.

I don't live in 'dog country, but I've gotten real tight groups with the 58 gr. V-max.  And my Ultra seems to shoot 95 gr. SST quite well, maybe not "minute-of-prairie dog", but certainly good enough for larger game.
