Small game drilling
« on: July 27, 2011, 06:39:20 AM »
I would love to have a double 410 over 22mag drilling for small game hunting.......In the proper scale of course.  :)  How about you?

;)  that would be a neat weapon, but I think in might opt for a 20 ga. over a Hornet, but the 22 mag. would be fine too..I guess I just like the Hornet...much would depend on what one wanted the drilling for...but I have had little success with the .410's we have owned in years past...

I am with you.
I think 20 ga is better as a general gun than the 410.  Ammo cost alone will allow you to shoot almost 2 20 ga shells to every one 410 with a wider variety of loadings.  I own a side by side 410 and have hunted with it quite a few times, but it was close quail and I needed to pick my shots.
The 22 Hornet would be a neat choice.  Gives you the ability of animals up to deer (where legal).
I think again 22 LR being cheap and available.  Some of the holy cow hyper loads come close to the 22 Mag.
Then again a Vierling (4 barrels) would be a neat choice.  Adding a center fire large pistol round (357 mag or 44 Mag) or a medium powered rifle round like 35 Rem or 30-30 and a 22 LR in the upper rib as a total meat gun.  Being able to wander the woods of the farm and being able to take quail, rabbit, tree squirrel, wood cock, deer or bear.  The 20 ga will also allow the use of lead free shot for swamp ducks like mallards, teal, and wood ducks.
But now I am adding all kinds of costs to making a great little gun.  Merkel makes some relitivly inexpensive drillings and in calibers like 22 Hornet.  I say relitive inexpensive as SXS and drillings are very expensive.

i  think  22lr over  20ga  or even  12ga

the  bigger shotgun   if needed  for bigger game...if need be

the  22 lr  is not so disturbing in the woods  and cheaper  to feed
CB  for ultimate discretion

22 lr wood  be 95%  of the shots taken

if  i need more than  the  22lr...i want alot  more.........20  or  12ga

I like the 22WMR MUCH better than the hornet, so that would be my first choise, and i much prefer the 20ga over the 410.  I also like my guns scaled down, that's why i never kept a 12ga. drilling, i just don't like carrying a heavy tank of a drilling.

I can slide in my chamber reducers into my 16ga bbls., and fire 20ga. ammo in it, and on top of that, my 16ga. is built on a 20ga. frame.  May as well have the 16 and use the reducers when i want to fire 20's...

I like the 20ga too DM. In fact I believe a Charles Daily SXS 20 was my favorite out of all the shotguns I've ever owned.  ;)  I agree with you on the 12ga. Just too bulky for my tastes. I could be happy with a double 20 or 28 over 22 mag I supose.  ;D

It just seemed like some responses were more for a all around drilling. I have a wonderfull SXS Lefever in 410bore. It is so much fun to squirrel hut with. I was just thinking if it had a 22mag barrel under the 410 tubes it would be a dandy small game gun.

Small game drilling.... ;)

Regards,

yes   i did
my first gun was a 12  SXS  ithaca
i was  only  allowed  bird shot  but other wise  free access to shoot ant time  at  age  14
a 12  is  what  i grew up  with  for a small game gun
dad  would not turn me loose with a 22 till i was 18
so  i still  view a 12  as a  ''SMALL GAME''   gun

i  always thought  of  a  410  or 20  was  for kids and women
calm  down  i was  wrong....and  just now learning  to  really like the  20 guage

single shot 410  or 22lr only  is legal  for night coon hunting....in  my state
the  only  real advandage  the  410.....other than just  liking the  410 better

I had a Savage 24V  30-30 over 20. Loaded the 30-30 with a 120 gr cast bullet at 22 rimfire velocities. I also loaded the 30 with a heavy cast bullet, 31141, and got the same energy as a factory 30-30 loading. Best of all, I got both 30 loads to zero without changing the 1-4X scope settings, and I could wingshoot with the scope.
