Where can I find a Blue print
« on: July 30, 2011, 03:14:13 PM »
Hi everyone I'm new to this forum and would like to know where I can get a blue print for a small thunder mug of at least 3/4" bore?
Thank You,

I am not aware of any plans for a thunder mug.

To me a Thunder mug isn't something that you need plans.  Look at  few pictures and go from there.  3/4  inch bore will need an minimum 2 1/4 diameter.

Have a look at the ones sponsor Dominick Carpenter makes http://www.blackpowder-cannons.com/

birdaug -

WELCOME to the board!

Thundermugs are easy!  (Quic route is to contact our sponsors - they're GOOD.)

As DD mentioned - keep wall thickness equal to bore diameter.  Use good steel - 1018 or better.

Keep inside corners rounded to keep stress-risers down.

If you have a drill press, use your imagination and go for it.  Plenty of large diameter drops available cheap on eBay.  You don't need a lathe to do short pieces.

Here is a 3" OD x 4.5" long mug made of 430 stainless that I picked up a few drops of.  It is bored 15/16" ID x 3" deep, so there is lots of metal thickness left all around.   About an hour sanding and then polishing on the buffing wheel turns it into a mirror.  Glued a disk of cork gasket material to the bottom.

Attached is a photo and a video of a low power firing.

While it's not the best drawing I have ever done, here is a small thundermug in the traditional style:

You don't have to make the base ring as a separate piece as implied by the hidden lines.
