Author Topic: Guess Colt does not want to sell any SAs (Read 2181 times)

As some of you may remember I have been interested in a new production Colt in .45. None of my dealers in my area can seem to obtain one. Yesterday a dealer gave me Colt's phone number and said maybe I could get further if I talked directly with a Colt rep. I called and was told to have a dealer of my choice contact them and maybe they could get an SA out in a minimum of six months. Even though their website has been promoting the return of the New Frontier models since last spring, when I asked about them I was told "yes, they are planning to produce New Frontiers again but had no idea when they might actually become available.
My second choice was going to be a USFA through Long Hunter, but they are no longer carrying USFA. Guess I need to figure out if want to go to another brand or just forget it. I may look for and be prepared to pay collector prices for a good vintage Colt, probably would be a good investment anyway.

I had 2 New Frontiers and two of the new ones . The 4 3/4 inch NF 45 Colt was very accurate buy the bbl was twisted to the left so much it looked like it was on a 45. The 7 1/2 inch NF also 45Colt was not a good shooter. The two new ones , both 5.5 in bbls one 45 Colt and the other 44 S&W spl. . and they had to be some of the first batch or so were not what one would expect for $1200.00 IMHO. I got over the name game real fast. Sold all 4 .

Cant comment on the newest Colt S/A's, but I have two, a 2nd generation SAA, and a 3rd generation NF, both in .45lc. I also have a SAA USFA in 44 spl. The USFA is better finished, better fit, and more accurate then either Colt, hands down, especially the 3rd generation gun. I keep the Colts for their collector value, but shoot and enjoy the USFA. If you are interested in a USFA, and having a hard time finding one, the dealer who's link I attached is a master dealer, and keeps a LARGE selection of USFA models in stock at less then retail. His web site lists models in stock, and prices.

The first production of the re-issed NF sixguns were 5 1/2" and 7 1/2" 44SPL and 45COLT.
MY pal in Indy got his new COLT NEW FRONTIER 5 1/2" 44SPL last week.
The new gun's serial numbers evidently start at NF20000 as his was NF2003x.
He said it looked superb.
I ordered my two 4 3/4", a 44SPL and a 45COLT last November when they were first announced, the only two I do not have already, and of course there never was a 4 3/4" 44SPL in the 2ND or 3RD generation COLT NF sixguns.

I'd love to have one. But I've read several times that the accuracy of a new Colt single-action is a crap shoot. It might shoot well and it might not. When I was a kid, my dad bought me a new 4/58 Colt .22. It shot so far to the left it was useless. But still, I like Colts.

The above is why I am looking for one manufactured in the last year. Supposably Colt recently replace all their machine equipment and had a change of CEO that is putting much more emphasis on QC. This is suppose to eliminate the crap shoot of getting a good one or not. Guess we will see.

Always get 'the right of return' if it aint right.
Gun show purchases mostly excepted, but from a dealer.......the thing is supposed to do the job it was built for. It is called 'implied warrantee' even if it is not specifically indicated.

I have owned 2 Colt Saa; a nickled 4 3/4" .44 spl, and I now have a second gen SAA in .45 colt. The .44 spl was the smoothest, best timed revolver I have ever owned or handled, and was an excellent shooter. The present .45 is a decent shooter. Not quite as good as some guns I have owned, but then again it shoots as good or better than most I have had. It definately shoot better than my eyes allow me to anymore! It does have the old Colt problem, .455 cylinder throats and a .4515 barrel. If you feed it .454 bullets, it does well, if .452, then not as well. But I have had that problem with several guns, if you feed them the ammo they like, they will shoot better. So the short of it is I like the gun. Yes it may shoot better if I do as I have thought and put a cylinder into it with .452 throats, but then again, it shoots as good now as I can, so what more could I ask of it. If I were in the market for a high in Saa type gun and didn't care anything about the pony on the frame, I'd buy a USFA. But there is still something about that pony and that fact it is a 'real Colt'. Does it shoot better than my Gaucho that I picked up used for $175 a few years ago? No, it does not. But I still love it and enjoy shooting it. Would I buy another? Depends on the model and the price. But I do love and enjoy the one I have. 44 Man

44 man , I had a 4-3/4 inch Colt SAA that was very accurate after the bbl was screwed in so the sight looked like it was on a 45 deg angle. Yours has cyl issues and others note problems . For $1200.00 plus should we not expect a gun that is free of these problems ?

With all respect to Colt or any gun builder does it cost more to use the correct reamer or soder the sight on correctly ?

You might have to look for a Colt SAA, there are usually lot's of them on Gunbroker, but the new 3rd gen. Colts I've seen & shot are well timed, accurate, good looking, & I think, worth the money.
A shop I was in last week, an hour & a half drive from my house, had 4 3rd gen. Colts in stock.

I picked up a cowboy model a couple of years ago. I guess I got lucky as it is a great gun. I know the purists don't like the transfer bar though.

Im afraid I wont spend that kind of money on an 'iffy' piece when there are alternatives, even if they dont have the pony. I say this as a guy who had a modest collection of Woodsmans and older dbl. action Colt's at one time and, to my friends bewilderment, prefer them to S&Ws. Maybe Im just tired of being hustled........

I have to admit that I don't have any first hand experience with their single actions (modern ones anyway). It has been my experience with some of their other iconic products like the 1911 and the AR rifles that when you stack them up against some of their imitators, all you get for the extra money is a pony emblem. Some times it's quite a bit more for that little pony. I have to imagine that with soooo many single actions available, at least some of them are a better gun for the money than you get from Colt.

im sure the biggest problem with supply is because there ramped up to produce ars for the military.
