First .32 H&R insert done
« on: August 21, 2011, 01:31:30 PM »
Just finished my first .32 H&R insert today.
18" long and sized for a 20 gauge.
Turned from a green mountain blank, and I recessed the muzzle by .040" to avoid damage that might occur to the muzzle if accidently bumped on the shotgun barrel breech while inserting it.
Probably won't get out this week to do any test firing, but I'll head to the local swamp this next weekend with my chrony and see what this little pistol cartridge will do through an 18" barrel.

Anyways here's a pic.

Looks good !!  I have made  quite a few similar to yours but I epoxy them in the shotgun barrel and mill a recess for the ejector / extractor. they have all been good shooters .
Its a great way to have a non factory caliber if you dont have the means to do threading.

I would do the bore measurements and make an O-Ring groove in the insert barrel for a snug, not hard, press in fit., then lube the O-Ring with a bore friendly slippery goo.

What gcrank said, that's how Larry did my Hornet insert, it's pretty accurate at 50yds.  ;)

+1 on the epoxy installation of the barrel insert.  Several hundred rounds of 45 Super down a 18.5" glued insert, no problems and 2" & better accuracy @ 100 yards.   And I don't have to worry about breakin' a nail trying to get a case out of the chamber because I have a fine workin' ejector. ;)

'Breakin' a nail'....... ;D ;D ;D ;D
I am going to assume that those groups are with a scope and a fair rest; even so, well done!, but are they cast bullet loads?
I am going to have to start playing with my 30-30 at 32-20 ballistics loads again, but the typical open sights (big front bead) on the '94 carbine are not conducive to tight groups. They were promising a few years ago before I got 'sidetracked'.........

Both cast & jacketed, cast are handloads and the jacketed are factory ammo.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but your reference to MCA inserts is much appreciated.

I have a 1980's  vintage 20 Gauge H&R shotgun and the prospect of getting an insert for it sounds very attractive.

Anybody knows if it would be safe to use a 30-30 Win insert on a shotgun like this?

30-30 was chambered in a few vintage models, M058, M157 and M158 for sure, the only issue I can see is the firing pin on the rifle versions was smaller, if you don't have primer issues, it should be fine.

I'm in the same boat as fluffyphydeaux2010 on the .30 Carbine insert. I'd like to get one as well but MCA does not make one in this caliber. I have a short adaptor of 12 gauge to 9mm. It works but I would much prefer an insert. MCA does not make any inserts or adaptors for .30 Carbine to any shotgun gauges....<><.... :)
