Sherlock Holmes I ain't, but when I saw this (2007) picture, a bright light shone all about me. I know that "Artilleryman" has been involved with "Camp Grayling" for years, he's also friends with "Matt Switlik", and he owns a U.S. M1861 8-inch siege mortar; so I"m going to make a wild guess, and say that one of these distinguished looking gents is none other than our Artilleryman. In fact, I'm going to go further out on the limb and suggest that the man on the right holding an award is he, because after all, it's his mortar.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

2" ball in one of the trees down range.....it had also gone thru a 12" hardwood in front of this tree......i LIKE the tree shots!

Yes.  The ground in the impact area is a series of low ridges which tends to launch them, also rifle rounds may tumble causing a high bounce.  We followed impacts on the ground and in the trees for at least a 1/2 mile behind the 1200 yard target line.

I think it would be neat to set up a camera and sound at the end of a cannon firing range....then post it after the impacts.....just to see n hear the impacts!

or maybe we could get a politician to hold the camera~
