Interested in getting one for my son. What do you think about the newer ones? Are they hard to find I haven't had much luck in finding a newer one in what little looking I have done. I Have found plenty of older ones for top dollar. How might one compare to a mossberg 464 in .22? I think that I would rather have a Marlin though.  I did a search on GBO and only came up with two post for the 39a.

In my opinion, I think the 39A is built a little better than the Mossberg plus the 39A has an unbeatable reputation. If you have a Dick's Sporting goods, Gamder Mtn.,Bass ProShop or Cabela's they all carry the 39A. I'm not sure of price because it's been many years since I have looked for one. I'm 64 years old and learned on a Marlin lever .22 and it still fires to this day. My kid's also learned to shoot on the same rifle. My dad bought it used sometime around 1940 but I can't read the serial number or model any more.

There is a good reason why the "older" ones are going for top dollar. Better quaily. Plus, the ones in really good condition are moving into the collector category.  Well worth the asking price. Course what you want to pay is the deciding factor. 
  Might try your local Gun Show, if you have any, for a used/new one.   Had an older 39A and it was a dandy!

If I had to pay the exact same $$$ ( and even a bit more, truth be told) for an older M39a (no crossbolt safety, no rebounding hammer) as for a new M39a - I'd happliy do so.

The quality (as posted above) is more than worth it.  I also wouldn't obsess over minor blemishes - IOW, don't sweat the small stuff.

BTW - The older/the better, but "condition" rules.

Dont forget to search pawn shops. I fear there wont be many bargains found at shows. Still, the materials and workmanship make the 39 a deal and a joy to own.  If you just want a plinker there are many around.
