« on: December 24, 2003, 10:03:20 AM »
I'm looking for any good load data for Newfoundland Moose in a 24" factory bbl. cal 270 win. Has anyone used the Encore in 270 for Elk or Moose ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Happy Holidays to all.

Haven't taken moose w/ the Encore but took a 60 inch bull here in Alaska
w/ .270 Win a couple of years ago. Remington 150gn Soft point Core-lokts.  1 shot between the eyes @ 30yds dropped him in his tracks for good. Took two more @ close range in the brain before he quit breathing though. May not have needed the follow up shots but my wife was with me and that bull was making horrible noises trying to suck that swamp water up his nose. One tough animal, that's for sure!
If I need too use .270 on moose again I'd probaly go w/ Hornady Light Magnum factory loads. 140 gn Interlock bullet @ 3100 fps. is hotter than anything I've seen in the loading manuals and shoots very well in my Ruger 77.
Friends report good things w/ Barnes X-bullet in the .270 on Moose also.

There was a picture in the local Fish/Hunt related paper up here that showed to women (and their female guide) that took a nice bull moose with a .270.  Not too sure of the range, but up here Moose shots tend not to be too far.  Keep the ranges reasonable and you should be OK.  Heck, me personally I would be wary of even the 06.  But of course that should do the job too.  Im thinking of having a custom .350 Mag barrel made for the off chance I someday get my ticket pulled for the lottery up here.

I've shot all of my elk with a 300win mag.  180gr failsafes.  Not to say that a lighter gun will not do the job for you.  Many guys take them with a 270 or -06.  I practice out to 500yards with my 300 and feel confidant shooting 300 - 350 on any elk.  The last two I've shot have been 325 and 135.  I was confidant on both shots.  I do have a MB on my 300 and yes it's louder than anything I have ever heard but worth it for target practice.
