parafin ok for chamber cast?

i know they make a metal for this but would parafin work to see if i had a headspace issue on a crack barrel?

The metal you are talking about is cerrosafe, and the reason it works so well is that in addition to melting at a low enough temperature to be useable, it shrinks slightly when it solidifies so it is easy to extract, then in about a half hour it expands back out to exactly the size it was cast making it an accurate representation of your chamber.

Paraffin on the other hand shrinks when it solidifies and then stays that way so it does not give you an accurate cast of your chamber.

In the old days, I won't say how old, I used sulfur as a casting agent. It is delicate when cast and there is a shrink factor that must be calculated into the measurements and removal can be a bit tedious, also there is the odor and the danger of fire.. All in all cerrosafe is a great boon and its reuseable..!

I thought I remembered folks using sulfur in the past but couldn't remember how they accounted for shrinkage.  For sure the smell and fire danger are big minuses, especially since we have cerrosafe now a days.

I always reccomend Brownells as I really like the customer service.. They even have a toll free techline for questions.. and they actually look! I bought a M75 Winchester a couple of years ago that had been drilled for a side mount. Weaver makes a side mount that looked to have the correct pattern but measurement is the only sure way. A call to the teckline and the guy on the other end said he didn't know the measurements..but if I'd hold a couple of minutes he's find out... A few minutes later he gave me the measurements, as he read the calipher!! He even swithed me to ordering and the base a rings were on the way.. now that little sporter is a sweet squirrel shooter and I'm a devoted Brownells user.    TechLine   800-741-0015

I agree with the Brownell's recommendation. They have a great tech line.  I have been dealing with them for over 30 years now and have yet to be diappointed.  Cerrosafe is the way to go with chamber castings.  I cast the chamber of a Remington Rolling block rifle in the early 70's with it and the dimensions were what told me it had a .43 Spanish chamber instead of the .43 Reformondo, which is what the company who sold the rifle to me had told me. Good thing too, if the .43 reformondo had chambered and I had fired the thing, it would  most likely have  blown up in my face. Wish I had kept that little package of cerrosafe, but I gave it away to someone.  James
