New Guide Gun
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:12:22 PM »
Bought a new .45-70 Guide Gun today.  I like it.

Does it have the ported barrel?  I had the .44 mag version with the 16 inch ported barrel, and ended up trading it for a 20 inch regular rifle.  To noisy, and not needed on a .44 mag., though it might help on the 45-70.

No this one is brand new.  They haven't made the ported guns in years.

Do you know when they stopped porting the guide guns? I just bought a 1895G 45/70 today off a guy that never fired it.

Swampman, are you familiar with crossing over the serial number to a date of manufacture?

serial # 00038xxx

I really enjoy my guide gun. Though I have one thing to say about your setup. I had mine set up the same way with a 2-7 nikon prostaff and with normal factory loads aka the remy's I had no troubles but once I took it to 444marlin energy levels the scope started boucing off my forehead. I decided to go with the XS sights and haven't looked back since it's te best walking rifle I own. I also put awild west picatini light mount on mine. I don't have the red dot on it anymore i needed it for another rifle. The mount the red dot is on was something I machined from a normal 1895 mount.

I don't plan on shooting anything hotter than Trapdoor level loads.  I can't see the need.

I looked on Marlinowners last night, and if my calculations are correct my guide gun was born in the year 2000.

Went to the range today to send some lead thru it for the first time in it's life, but the range was closed for maintenance. Now the anticipation grows!

I love the Prostaffs.  This one is a 2-7X32.

Nice gun Swampy! I have the same thing. Still trying to decide if I want the scope you have or if I want to go with a ghost ring. Either way, I love that gun! Been running Hornady LeverEvo's through mine at 325 gr.

Very nice!  That makes me want to get the .444 back out of the safe. How do you like the Nikon Pro Staff scopes?  I have had 4 (only 3 now) and have somewhat mixed opinions on them. I had one of the .444 at one time.  Mine are all 3X9's.

I have 4 Prostaffs and they are great.  I had one on my .444 too.  For leverguns I prefer the 2-7X32.

Don't have the Guide Gun, but my 1895 SS is a veteran of to many hog and deer hunts to count .
If you have to have a scope on a lever gun I like the low power scopes 1.75x5 Redfeild Low Pro.

Well, by my name you can tell I like em! Very nice rifle/scope combo there to the OP. All my Marlin levers are ported. My 1895G is a first year 1998 model. The ported rifle time-line ran from 1998 through 2002 on some models.

Here is a pic of my 1895G.

I just bought another 1895SS.  It's also wearing a 2-7X33 Nikon Prostaff.
